Adventure 004: Event and Problem Parenting

[Action: all over town.]

[The Event - for what else would one call it? - has been interesting. But not really telling. Other than the places that were locked to the citizens remain unaffected. Which would tell him something, he's sure, if he could find the right person to talk to. The Drones are worse than worthless these days, so he avoids them at all costs. But there has to be someone, somewhere smart enough to be an assistant as he tries to piece this information together. So, he is wandering around town hoping to encounter such a person. Of course, they might have to come to him.]

[Phone: filtered from drones.]

Has anyone taken any readings on what is going on? I'm specifically looking for readings on the radio static or voices that are coming through and on the 'Phasing' for want of a better word. I would like to meet anyone who is doing scientific research on what is happening.

[Action: 915 Bilko Boulevard - locked to housemates]

[Sherlock has decided to call a family meeting. Really it's more of a 'check in' to make sure everyone is alive - no, he doesn't care, not really, but it's what the head of households do, right?]

[Sherlock hums in reply to Maladict.]

[Then he turns to Conan.]

And if you wish secrets to stay secret, best not use the phone either.

[That's about as close to grounding as Sherlock gets.]

[ Huh..? Turning back to Sherlock now. ]

You're not blackmailing me into not using the phone, are you?

[Sherlock nods in agreement with Maladict.]

Blackmail? [He chuckles, quite amused.] I don't have to. You've shown all by yourself the trouble you get into talking on the phone. I'm simply reminding you.

[Don't mess with Sherlock.]

I was asking about Mayfield's recent glitch. I didn't expect to hear from him over the phone. But I guess he really was surprised to find I was still alive. [ But then again... even Conan's kind of surprised he didn't die that night. But... it's not exactly the first time he's cheated death. ]

Yes, well. Let's try to STAY alive, shall we? No more boat rocking this week.

[Sherlock looks from one to the other and grins.]

Yes. Well, this was a very productive meeting. Thank you all for attending.

[Because there's nothing more to this, right?]

It's not like I try to get myself killed. I always have a reason for taking the risks I do.

Oh yes. It was very...eye opening.

[Conan you are getting a look boy] Yes, and most of them are reasons the rest of us wouldn't agree with.

[Sherlock nods, agreeing with Maladict. Time for a different tactic: What would John say?]

Look, Conan. You are so used to taking care of everyone else. Let us take care of you while you're here.

[Yeah, that's what John would say, right? Or at least something like that?]

[ He appreciates the offer, he really does, which is why he's just quiet for awhile. ]

...What would you do? If you were me and someone from something that dangerous showed up... the very thing that threatens to destroy everything you care about... Knowing that everyone's safety depends on a single lie... would you be able to relax?

No. But I wouldn't want to be alone, either. Back home, I have my Regiment. Everyone needs someone in their lives, and believe me, I used to think differently too.

...But it's that much easier to have someone in your corner.

[Until it's not... Sherlock doesn't say his thoughts out loud. He's suddenly lost in what he was doing when he arrived here. He's lost thinking about the lives he was saving. It takes him a minute to realize Maladict has stopped talking.]

I don't want anyone to die because of a stupid mistake I made almost two years ago. If anyone has too.. I'd rather it be me.

Yes, well, that's too bad because I'd rather it not be you. So you're just going to have to learn to live with the fact people are going to watch out for you. And won't be willing to stand back while you get yourself killed over some selfless complex you have going on

And as long as you're under this roof, you're under.... [He pauses and looks at Maladict, hoping it's okay to speak for her this once.] ... our protection. So just knock this attitude off and... I don't know - go do what kids do.

[Erm, yes his argument lost all the punch there.]

I don't want protection from something that's my fault. I refuse to let anyone die because they were trying to protect me-I could never live with another person's death on my conscience.

Sherlock, I'm fairly certain he doesn't know what kids do. [But hey at least she hasn't punched him for speaking for her. This time, anyway]

Well, you're lucky death isn't an issue for me. I've died on my home world plenty of times. Vampires always come back. It's what we do.

[He looks at her somewhat scandalized.]

Well... I don't know what kids do.

[He can't be anymore help, but thanks for not punching him?]

And killing me... would be tremendously ambitious.

[ Wait. What? His attention snaps to Maladdict. ]

[ And back to Sherlock. ]

I don't want to get into the mentality that there's nothing you can't do. But... Um.. I really do appreciate everything you've done for me.

Neither do I, really. Play with toy swords?

[She nods at Conan]

It's a perk of my species. A drop of blood and BOOM, we're back within seconds. [She's not certain if it's come back to her in MAYFIELD yet, but hey, Conan doesn't need to know that]

[Sherlock smiles at Maladict's comment about swords.]

[He's serious again, just a quickly. Being in this strange place is making him loose his edge. He looks at Conan.]

Then don't make me prove myself to you and accept the help that's offered.

I can't say thats something I can just do overnight but... I can promise to work on it...

I think I can accept that. It's better than nothing.
