Adventure 004: Event and Problem Parenting

[Action: all over town.]

[The Event - for what else would one call it? - has been interesting. But not really telling. Other than the places that were locked to the citizens remain unaffected. Which would tell him something, he's sure, if he could find the right person to talk to. The Drones are worse than worthless these days, so he avoids them at all costs. But there has to be someone, somewhere smart enough to be an assistant as he tries to piece this information together. So, he is wandering around town hoping to encounter such a person. Of course, they might have to come to him.]

Has anyone taken any readings on what is going on? I'm specifically looking for readings on the radio static or voices that are coming through and on the 'Phasing' for want of a better word. I would like to meet anyone who is doing scientific research on what is happening.

[Sherlock has decided to call a family meeting. Really it's more of a 'check in' to make sure everyone is alive - no, he doesn't care, not really, but it's what the head of households do, right?]

[ Conan had not told Sherlock everything... mostly because he didn't really want to bore Sherlock with his life story but also because he's so used to guarding the secret it's been quite sometime since someone forced and/or blackmailed it out of him. ]

...About two years ago while I was out with my friend, Ran, we stumbled across a murder case, in it I met Gin and Vodka for the first time, only at that point I didn't know their code names. To me, they just looked highly suspicious. Later in the evening after the murder was solved I saw one of the men sneaking around some bushes so I followed.

He met up with some CEO that the organization had seen smuggling drugs and illegal weapons and I witnessed the black mail transaction. I-I was so focused on the deal that I forgot about the other one-Gin-and by the time I had remembered he'd already caught me.

I don't-I don't remember a whole lot after that-they were talking about how to kill me and Gin mentioned there were still too many cops around to use guns and they decided on a poison that hadn't yet been tested on humans. He forced the pill down my throat and they left.

When I woke up everything was so much bigger and when I tried to tell the police what happened, of course they just laughed. I got away from them before they could take me to an orphanage and ran home-only I couldn't reached the latch on the gate to my house anymore and had to convince a family friend that I was really Kudo Shinichi. It was Agasa's idea to hide my identity-he thought that if they learned the truth that they'd come after me. So I changed my name to Edogawa Conan and went to live with Ran since her dad's a detective.

The next time I ran into them I only just barely managed to dispose of a bomb they left on an express train-of course there was no trace of their involvement and all I managed to learn was their code names.

Not long after that I ran into another one of their members-a much lower ranked member that didn't know much about the organization other than that they were shrouded in black with alcoholic code names and they had her younger sister. She tried to buy her and her sister's way out of the organization. They told her something along the lines of- 'you can pull this robbery off, we'll let you and your sister go.' Needless to say they never intended to let her go and tricked her into taking the life of one her accomplices before killing her too-her real name was Miyano Akemi. When they found her she'd been shot in the stomach and since the only gun found at the scene was in her hand, it was ruled as a suicide.

A few months later I ran into another one of their members-his code name was Tequila- at a video game convention, he was there to get a list of all the top computer programmers from one of the people at the convention. Unfortunately, he was blown up in a blast before I could I could any information, I managed to get the meeting place from the employee the bomb had been meant for but just as I arrived at the building the floor the meeting place was on exploded. The Organization must have had another one of their members at the convention other than Tequila. That was the first case I noticed that was swept under the rug. No evidence, no investigation, even though at least thirteen people died in that blast.

[ It feels good to finally be giving someone the whole story-even if he really shouldn't, with his back against the wall, what else can he do? ]

It wasn't until after that I met Haibara, real name Miyano Shiho, and code name 'Sherry.' She's the little sister of the Akemi-san and creator of the drug that shrank me-APTX4869.

After they killed her sister she demanded to know why and ceased all production on the drug they had been making her create-the drug wasn't intended to be a poison and I imagine that the desired results were something along the lines of what happened to me-creating an unnaturally longer lifespan. Haibara refused to work for them and they sentenced her death-as a last resort she took the same poison-although she only shrank too and went directly to me.

I noticed she had, what I thought was, an irrational fear of them. During the short time it took Haibara to escape and to find me the organization relocated their research branch and burned down the old one to prevent her from getting the police. I agreed to protect her and she said she'd start working on a cure.

[ There's a lot more left, but for now, he'll just let them both process that information/answer any questions either one might have. ]

[Maladict listened patiently, taking in every detail and storing it. That poor kid, and she thought SHE had issues. After he finished, she nodded]

So you're still trying to find out how to make you...well, grow again?

[Sherlock ran his hands through his head. No wonder the kid was so messed up. There are so many things he wants to say right now, but he's decided to remain silent, letting Conan answer instead.]

Yes. While she works on the cure, I continue to investigate any leads that might lead to their downfall. [ He just offers Maladdict a serious nod. ]

Gin was obsessed with finding Haibara-or just 'Sherry' as he knows her. By some lucky or unlucky, depending on your standpoint, coincidence Haibara and I happened to come across Gin's car on our way home. When she told me whose car it was I broke into it and planted a listening device and tracker in the car and we hid in a nearby ally until Gin and Vodka showed up.

I was able to learn that one of their members was going to be at a party at the Haido city hotel to assassinate someone but Gin noticed a single strand of Haibara's reddish blonde hair and immediately recognized-so he found the listening and tracking device and crushed them both.

I wasn't able to stop the assassination but I did find out how it was done and the identity of the organization member 'Pisco.' He recognized Haibara's younger form and had her locked in a storage room where the hotel stored the alcohol. Pisco or the other member that was there-Vermouth- must have called Gin since he clearly wanted to be the one that killed Sherry.

Gin doesn't know about her shrinking so I had her swallow some Chinese Liquor that has the curious effect of reverting us back to normal-but it only works once. Something I found out about when I rival detective stopped by the agency. He gave me a sip to cure a cold. It made it worse.

Anyway, I had Haibara swallow that alcohol and escape out the chimney since she'd never have been able to do so as a child. Unfortunately, Gin came into the room before she reached the top and was able to figure out where she went-he was waiting for her on the roof.

I didn't hear much of the conversation, by that time I was headed to the roof and I couldn't communicate with Haibara through my glasses-which I'd earlier loaned her since she was so uneasy. I know that Gin shot her six times- twice in the left shoulder, once in the right, both her legs and one that scarped her side.

I couldn't let him see me so I fired a sleeping dart from my watch at him before yelling at Haibara to get down the chimney-the sleeping dart didn't work though-all Gin did was shoot himself in the arm to keep from falling asleep.

[Maladict let out a low whistle] That takes a certain level of insanity and mental fortitude. Not the sort of person you want to be dealing with at all. You can never tell what the crazy ones will do next.

...But still. Carry on.

Carry on? You mean there's more?

[Sherlock was never one for patience.]

I said I'd tell you everything and I am. But I can stop there if you want me too.

[Maladict casts Sherlock a LOOK, before gesturing to Conan]

Don't mind him being an idiot. Carry on.

Yes, just ignore me, I'll find some way to entertain myself in the meantime.

[Idiot indeed. He's bored, there's a difference.]

[ Conan chooses to ignore that because he can be a brat too. ]

Needless to say I got Haibara out of there before Gin could witness her shrinking but Pisco did. I heard from Agasa that Gin Killed pisco that same night the man who was killed, the original Target of that night's family was killed in their house and the building burned down. The company the man had been working for also burned with the president several and other employees.

It was then Haibara explained to me how vital it was that no one learn the truth. I still didn't quite understand-I just thought about how imperative it was that I crush them.

Immediately after the incident they put their highest ranked member on on the ongoing hunt for the traitor. Vermouth started closing in on Sherry by disguising herself as the male nurse at the high school I should be attending.

It didn't take her too long to figure out Edogawa Conan was really Kudo Shinichi and Haibara was really Sherry. Not surprising, back when she was still posing as her mother, Sharon Vineyard she was good friends with my mother.

So you had trouble at the school? Quite a public place for them to attack some supposedly small children.

[Sherlock is starting to wonder if this is some elaborate story to talk about school bullying.]

You know if this were a telly program I'd have a word for it...

['Crap Telly.' He won't say that out loud yet.]

Ah.. no.. let me explain it a little better... [ And without trying to be a brat. ]

After the incident at the hotel Vermouth started looking around the agency-it might be because she recognized me at the hotel as the kid that's usually in papers for stopping Kaitou Kid. Doesn't really matter, what does is that she knew where to look. The problem is that Vermouth is a master of disguise-she and my mother both learned the technique from the same magician which is how they met- so I faced with figuring out who she was disguised as. My two suspects were the English teacher at Teitan high who was.. rather bad a faking a foreign accent and, of course, Araide-sensei who is the male nurse that helps out at the high school a lot.

The English teacher is actually an FBI agent, but at that point she more in the way than help as she herself was starting to close in on who the organization was after, though she still doesn't know why. Vermouth knew that I was getting closer to the truth and tried to distract me by sending an invitation to an off-season halloween party to Edogawa Conan but using the mail address of Kudo Shinichi. From there I came up with a plan to throw her off guard and asked my friend Hattori to disguise as me and go to the party as Kudo while I disguised as Haibara and had Vermouth kidnap me so she'd take me to her boss.

It didn't work out that way though, Jodie-the-er-FBI agent, saw through Vermouth's plan to kidnap Haibara and came to collect her-or me-and use her as bait to lure Vermouth to an abandoned warehouse by the docks. Vermouth and Jodie had a brief discussion in which Vermouth intentionally led her to believe she herself has fallen for Jodie's trap when in actuality Vermouth had lured Jodie into a trap. She waited until one of the organization members-Calvados- shot Jodie to reveal that it had all been a trap. To stop Vermouth from killing Jodie I had to reveal who I really was and intended to use the wrist watch stun gun to make Vermouth drive me and Jodie-san to the hospital but things I guess weren't quite chaotic enough because Haibara managed to get out of the basement I had locked her in and used the spare glasses to track down my location. While I was yelling at her to run Vermouth turned my wrist watch against me and the next thing I remember was slamming into the side of a car door while Vermouth was escaping-me in tow.

She drove the car to a forested area where she mailed her boss-I know she mailed her boss because when she got a return mail she muttered 'okay boss.' I had her trapped-I revealed that I was awake and taped to a heart monitor and recording device-if my heart stopped the information would be sent to Agasa who was waiting somewhere nearby incase something went wrong. She told me she was impressed and said she'd give up on hunting Sherry. I wasn't satisfied so she made a bet with me using sleeping gas-If I woke up first she'd let me call the police and she'd give up the identity of her boss. She never intended to do anything of the sort and only shot herself-I think in the upper part of her leg and destroyed the recording device and heart monitor.

After that I was forced to trust her word that she wouldn't come after me or Haibara again. She hasn't told anyone in the organization but I think that's only because she can't. That is has something to do with why she doesn't age and the original drug the organization was making Haibara's parents develop and Haibara inherited after they were killed.

[She listens again, most of it doesn't make a great deal of sense to her, but she can understand the basics]

Yeah well, you've never been against them so I can't expect you to understand just how bad the situation is. Especially if you keep interrupting.

I have boss's number-but that's what Haibara calls Pandora's box. The biggest lead I have and also the most dangerous. I don't think you'd ever run into it here, but just incase, the number follows the tune to a Japanese children's song 'Seven Children.'

[ Please don't ask him to sing it. ~~Read: Please Ask.~~ ]

I don't know what crap telly means.

[There's a distinct pause here] For those of us who don't have a Japan in their home world, namely me, can you sing it?

[Sherlock groans.]

No don't. It's not even a song about children. It's about a mother crow. And from what you've said the song has nothing to do with anything - other than the tune matches the number you have, but you already have the number, so it doesn't matter.

Without knowing the tune you can't recognize the number. But.. well... it doesn't really matter since neither of us have a cellphone and dialing that number over the phone here runs the unnecessary risk of Gin overhearing it.

And singing it is out of the question anyway. [ He won't specify why. ]

You two are no fun at all.

But still, I'd rather know the number. You know, just in case.

Indeed, you could just tell us the number....

You won't see the number. Even if you were to somehow get a hold of one of their phones it wouldn't be in the call history. The reason why is follows the tune of seven children is so that easier to remember and they can immediately delete their call history.

Besides, even here that number isn't up for investigation. I don't know what Haibara meant when she called it Pandora's box, but from what I've seen them do it's better not to risk it-yet.

That yet is very unsettling, Conan. That 'yet' usually means you might just risk it one day.

That "yet" also means you're willing to lead us into danger in spite of our desires to keep you and ourselves safe.

[Umm, yes, Sherlock did just agree with Maladict, he just had to add more to it.]

That 'yet' means I only intend to use the number once I know I can crush them once and for all and for that I'll have to be back in my own world. After all, there's no sense in using it here.
