Adventure 004: Event and Problem Parenting

[Action: all over town.]

[The Event - for what else would one call it? - has been interesting. But not really telling. Other than the places that were locked to the citizens remain unaffected. Which would tell him something, he's sure, if he could find the right person to talk to. The Drones are worse than worthless these days, so he avoids them at all costs. But there has to be someone, somewhere smart enough to be an assistant as he tries to piece this information together. So, he is wandering around town hoping to encounter such a person. Of course, they might have to come to him.]

[Phone: filtered from drones.]

Has anyone taken any readings on what is going on? I'm specifically looking for readings on the radio static or voices that are coming through and on the 'Phasing' for want of a better word. I would like to meet anyone who is doing scientific research on what is happening.

[Action: 915 Bilko Boulevard - locked to housemates]

[Sherlock has decided to call a family meeting. Really it's more of a 'check in' to make sure everyone is alive - no, he doesn't care, not really, but it's what the head of households do, right?]

[Maladict is just staring at you two from her chair. DETECTIVE BOYS STOP]

I do so love it when you two are cryptic.

And I'm fine. I'm not the one who landed myself in hospital.

Indeed. As to being cryptic: Conan and I were discussing the issues that landed him in hospital. He is to make no attempt to go after Gin again.

[He gave that little response to Conan. Now he turns to Maladict.]

I'm glad you're okay, you haven't gotten stuck inside anything have you? With all the phasing....

[Sherlock is making an attempt at expressing caring.]

[ Conan's attention is yanked away from the book and he suddenly slams it down, suddenly angry. ]

I'm not involving her in this!

[ Apparently his ribs still aren't up to sudden movement and loud out bursts as pain is shooting through him, pain that he's blatantly ignoring. ]

N-Not this kind of danger! ...Th-the less people that know the better!

[Awwww, Sherlock. You try so hard too!] No, I've actually tried not to lean on too many solid object for that very reason.

[She arches a brow at Conan's outburst, before folding her arms]

'Her' happens to be a trained solider and a vampire. I don't need to be wrapped up in cotton wool.

[Sherlock gives Conan the look.]

"Her" also happens to be sitting in this room.

[His tone softens slightly. Very slightly.]

Besides, it's better that Maladict be aware of the situation so she can be prepared. Or would you rather something happen to her because she was left in the dark?

[The image of John strapped to a vest of Semtex comes unbidden to Sherlock's mind. As the look on John's face as he flung himself from the roof. Somethings can't be helped. This can.]

[ Conan cares about that look about as much as he cares about the shooting pain in his side at the moment. That is to say, he doesn't. ]

Y-You don't get it! This really is one of those things that it's more dangerous to know about it! And it isn't j-just that. Knowing about it is a burden because suddenly you've been trusted with a secret that could get a lot of people killed.

You... [ He has pause to take a few breaths ] -You don't know anything about them.

[So flatly] Oh no. Will you have to shoot me now I know it?

Been there, done that, got the wonderful, horrible nightmares to go with it. You'd be surprised how good I am at keeping secrets. But that's besides the point. You keep getting yourself hurt by being stupid and secretive, and to be honest I'm getting tired of worrying if you're going to come home or if you're going to end up broken in an alleyway somewhere.

So tell me or not, I will find out. I'm not putting you or anyone here at risk. [Stupid family. Getting under her skin and making her care about them. It was all their fault]

[Sherlock tried to stop the wry grin that appeared as Maladict spoke. But he failed. He had some things in common with her - including the attempts at stupid caring.]

You might have the brain and memories of a 17 year-old, Conan. But clearly, you're still a child.

[He looked over at Maladict and under his breath questioned.]

You too?

[There were reasons Sherlock didn't like to sleep - beyond how time-consuming and boring it is.]

[ He freezes as he registers what Sherlock has just done. The secret is out now ]

IT'S NOT YOUR SECRET TO TELL!

[ He would have stormed away and slamed his door but since can't and now his ribs are really protesting he just slides to the floor. ]

Yes, me too. I should tell you about this time I nearly-

[Oh. Well there's that secret. Maladict blinks, taking in this information for a moment, before giving a shrug, moving to try to help Conan to his feet]

Get on a chair before you hurt yourself.

[Then, when she realises she should probably make comment on this big reveal] Well. That explains a lot. I have to admit, I'm relieved. I was starting to worry if you were an undercover elf or something.

So. Did a witch do it? Maybe a wizard? I'd go for the latter usually, they're more incompetent.

[Sherlock nods to Maladict, to say he would be interested in discussing it later, if it needs to be. He looks from one to the other.]

You never told her.

[He just sighs, disappointed, what can he say to that?]

How was I to know you hadn't told her?

[ He gets to his feet again but then waves her off, far too angry to just sit down right now. ]

I only told you because I thought it'd be useless to hide it. Why would I tell someone something that just knowing about it puts them in danger?

For the record. No one else in town knows. Please don't tell anyone else.

[ Right now he doesn't really care that he should be resting, right now he just wants to get away so he can calm down and assess the damage. ]

[ He makes for his room because he's fairly sure if he were to go out the front door someone would stop him. Best to go out the window then. ]

[She returns the nod, sure hubby, they can sit and chat about their horrifying nightmare experiences together. It'll be fun]

Oh. Alchemy. [That's never pleasant]

Again, I have to point out my ability to keep a secret. People can be whoever they want, keep whatever secrets they want. It's not my place to tell peop- what are you doing?

[Sherlock sighs again.]

Clearly, he's going to his bedroom, because he thinks if he tries to get out one of the doors on this floor, we'll try to stop him. That only leaves him with going out through the window in his bedroom.

But he forgets that some of us were children once as well and know all such tricks.

[He looks over at Conan, go on, deny it, Sherlock dares him.]

[ Conan stops about a quarter of the way to his door and manages to raise an eyebrow. ]

In my state? That would just result in a lot of unnecessary pain.

[ But that doesn't mean he won't do it. ]

Because running away is always the best of ideas. [Says the woman who solved her problems by running away yep]

Just stay and rest up before you go off charging into something else. Go rest in your room, I promise you won't be bothered if you feel the need to brood over this.

[Sherlock looks over at Maladict at her last comment.]

Did you get on well with John?

[Because that sounded a lot like him. He looks back at Conan.]

Listen to your... to the adult female in this house.

[Besides she's been here longer than Sherlock. Even if 1950s suggests he's the head of household.]

I'm not going to go charging into anything. [ Well... he doesn't plan to, at least. ]

Fine. If you need me, I'll be in my room. [ Maybe. ]

I did, actually, for the short time I knew him.

[Conan :|]

Except you do have a habit of finding trouble. Just promise me you'll not go running off outside today.[Pause] Or hobbling, or biking, or any other form of movement.

[Sherlock hums in reply to Maladict.]

Not surprised.

[Then he turns to Conan.]

And if you wish secrets to stay secret, best not use the phone either.

[That's about as close to grounding as Sherlock gets.]

How far do you think I could get with two healing ribs?

[ Huh..? Turning back to Sherlock now. ]

You're not blackmailing me into not using the phone, are you?

Given it's you, pretty far.

[Yeah, she know what you're like kiddo]

[Sherlock nods in agreement with Maladict.]

Blackmail? [He chuckles, quite amused.] I don't have to. You've shown all by yourself the trouble you get into talking on the phone. I'm simply reminding you.

[Don't mess with Sherlock.]

I was asking about Mayfield's recent glitch. I didn't expect to hear from him over the phone. But I guess he really was surprised to find I was still alive. [ But then again... even Conan's kind of surprised he didn't die that night. But... it's not exactly the first time he's cheated death. ]

Yes, well. Let's try to STAY alive, shall we? No more boat rocking this week.
