That's not precisely how I expected to wake up yesterday, but all things considered, it could be worse.

Well then, introductions, I suppose. Best as I can manage, at least. My name is Remus, and I assure you that I am a completely uninteresting human being. So uninteresting, I can't rightly think how to introduce myself, apparently.

[sigh] I always was crap at this.

I'm still-- still trying to work everything out here, so if someone would be so kind as to entertain a few questions? I realize we're all relatively in the dark here, but...

Goodness, where to start? The frequent death and maiming might be a bit off-putting at first, but it's not exactly worrisome since it never lasts. I would personally be more concerned with the unpredictable dronings or the possibility of being stuck next to unpleasant neighbors.

Rare are the times when one must be more concerned about nosy neighbors than death.

The droning does sound-- well, unpleasant, to say the least. Think I'll try to avoid that bit. Has it ever happened to you?

You would be surprised how much more inconvenient neighbors become when you can't escape them.

[there's a brief pause since this is encroaching on the edge of touchy topics for him.] Once, for a period of twenty-four hours. I returned to my own world for several weeks and woke up here again with hardly any time missed at all. It can vary from person to person, though. Some have been gone from this town for less than a day but have spent decades back in their own worlds. Others leave this place for months or years, but if they return, they claim nothing had changed for them in their own world at all.

That's odd. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, then.

But in the interest of curiosity, might I have your name?

It does seem to be entirely random. It does seem that the chances of someone becoming permanently droned rise the more times they're killed, though. [except this is just a crazy paranoia-fuelled theory with no real backing but details.]

...one thing I do wonder, though. Why drones? What's the point in keeping us around as zombies like that, if their aim is to make us squirm?

The same to you. Ah, but if it's a question of what their aim is, most people assume we're here for a reason other than their entertainment. It has been stressed before that a few notorious figures don't actually like us at all, but we need to be kept around for some reason. There's a theory that we're needed to power the city.

Ask around for people who were here when the storage tanks in the dairy were found. It wasn't a theory so much as a reality that was passed off as a joke, but some people, myself included, still believe in it.

Hm. [another, slightly longer pause than the first. all these tough questions today!] Personally, I've gotten use to it to the point that day-to-day living is bearable. There are some morons around here who can't manage to get adjusted to matter what, but I suppose those are the types who would be picked out of the evolutionary chain in their own worlds anyway.
