ADVENTURE 003: Jobs are Dull

[Sherlock had heard about the possibility of being droned, so here he is at work. And he's actually, you know, working. He's not here for his own gain, nor to do research. And he's actually pointing customers in the right direction, after telling them something about themselves they'd rather keep hidden. He doesn't sound like he wants to help. He sounds more like he's here under threat of punishment - which is pretty much true.]

[Sherlock is reading a book - or pretending to. He's actually watching drones and people milling about. He's hoping to try to think his way out of this place. And he's hoping by observing others, he'll learn something.]

[He looks about eight years old, which is eternally annoying to him. One day he will be grateful of slow ageing, but not yet.]

They're not for me, they're for my brother. He tends to overeat and I'd rather have some antacids in the house just in case.

[Sherlock narrows his eyes to see if this kid is telling the truth.]

And why didn't he come himself?

[Sherlock might be noticing the age thing - he lives with Conan after all.]

[He is sort of telling the truth. His brother does eat too much, but that's never given him a stomach ache.]

He's at the church, working.

[Such a lie. He's probably napping in the confessional.]

No. The inflection with how you said "working" leads me to suspect your brother shows up to do his job, but doesn't actually do any work.

[Sherlock looks the youth up and down.]

And you're older than you appear. Which makes me question if you're telling me the truth about the medicine you need.

[People would do much better to say as little as possible to Sherlock.]

[He's taking Sherlock for a mind-reader, so he takes an instant dislike to him. Not that there's any indication, his smile is just as polite as it was a moment ago.]

I wouldn't know about being older than I appear, sir. How old do I look?

[He's only ten in truth, so he's not far behind his real age.]

Oh I'm not sure looks matter here as much as they do elsewhere. Your speech pattern is closer to that of a ten or twelve year-old. But your body is that of an eight or nine year old.

[Sherlock lives for figuring these things out, though.]

I guess I'm just small for my age.

[He smiles sunnily, leaning a bit further on the counter.]

May I please have those medicines?

Depends on if you plan to tell me what they are actually for or not.

[He can be patient - sort of.]

They're for my brother.

[That part of it was true. It's just Abel never got problems from overeating, not real ones anyway, they were for after Cain poisoned his food so he didn't suffer too badly.

Apparently Cain thinks it's okay to poison his brother's food for kicks, as long as it's not fatal and he provides some pain relief after.]

[Sherlock smirks. He's used that tone himself.]

For what kind of experiment are you using your brother?

Experiment, sir?

Oh, come now. I too have an older brother and I liked to do experiments on him. He had a terrible time with his weight. I liked to help him out.

[He wouldn't have gone as far as poisoning him, but hey, he might think this lad is impressive if he knew.]

Actually, I'm the older brother.

[But he's looking interested nonetheless.]

Help him out how?

Oh are you? That changes everything. It's one thing for the younger brother to test his older brother. It's quite another when it's the other way around.

[Sherlock just stares.]

Didn't you say he was working - or rather not working - at the church? If he's younger than you....

[And now you've talked Sherlock out of letting you have antacids.]

We're actually twins, it's just that Mayfield took us from different points in our future. I'm the older twin, but I'm only ten here and he's a full grown adult.

[And the depressing thing about that? It's all 100% true.]

Different time lines. I've heard people mention that before. A father and son team, though they look practically the same age...

[So, it's not hard to believe.]

So, here in Mayfield, how old is your brother?

Ancient.

[The glib remark is accompanied by a chuckle.]

You should see his hair, it's grey as anything.

[Sherlock just gives the lad a look.]

Colour of hair means nothing. How old is he?

[Because he might be reconsidering the antacid request.]

Old enough to be an ordained priest.

[He doesn't want them that badly, he can just ask Holland for them later.]

Hence why he is not working... in the church. Then he is old enough to take care of himself. Very well.

[Sherlock gestures for the lad to follow him.]

[Curious, Cain does as he's bid and follows Sherlock. Hopefully this will lead to the antacids he wanted.]

Was there a particular brand you wanted?

[Sherlock did lead him to the aisle that contained the antacids.]

No, any are fine. Preferably strong ones, please.

Well, no such thing as "Extra Strength" back in the 50's. And there were only a few 'chewable' kinds, as you can see. Most were either liquid or you dissolved them in water.
