62 - Action
[He could do this. That wasn't to say Pokey was particularly stoic; in all honesty, he was still scared as hell. But hey, the pain right now wasn't as bad as each of the times he'd been killed. The phantom pains from being burned alive? Seemed to come and go, often pretty inconveniently. He could do with it. The scarring from having his throat slit? Was surprisingly less painful this time. It was happily enough just the scarring, which made breathing uncomfortable and hard, but again, Pokey could deal.
The worst part had been the pain of having his face disfigured again, both from the damage of the acid itself and being forced to remember the betrayal that led to it. At least he didn't have to deal with having his throat burned through again, just his face, leaving him half blind. That was the point Pokey realized he had to do something. He had to get something to dull the pain and
He knew he could ask for help. For once? He knew he could trust people to help him heal. But he couldn't ask that. Not when there were probably people who deserved it a lot more. So out to the store he goes.]
[Action - Mayfield Hospital; Pharmacy Section]
[If you're in the hospital or, more accurately, the small local pharmacy attached to it, you're find Pokey wearing one of the most ridiculously large coats he could find, hood up and his head held down the entire time, an obnoxious yellow scarf tied around his neck. He starts by seeming to look through the medicines they do have out and in stock for painkillers, no matter how weak, and gathering them up in his arms.
And then something goes wrong and, trembling, his right arm shudders and goes limp, all the bottles he had been gathering up dropping to the floor as his left hand reaches to grab at his arm.]
[Action - Around Town]
[Pokey knows where he is. Don't be confused by the fact that he maybe stops in the street, just staring for a moment. Things just...look fuzzy. And he isn't sure if he's going the right direction at the moment. Everything seems weird and blurry, and familiar and yet so different at the same time, and god just why does his head hurt so much?
Don't mind him. He's sure he knows what he's doing. He just needs to lean against the light pole for a minute to rest.]

[around town]
...Pokey?
[Slugger puts a bracing hand on his friend's shoulder. He can't see much more of Pokey's face other than his eyes, but it's enough to recognize him.]
[around town]
After a few seconds he calms, and just nods his head. He had his notebook with him, wrapped up inside his jacket with him now, but he doesn't take it out. Not when he only has one free arm.
So a few nods of his head is the only recognition he can give.]
no subject
Are you okay?
no subject
Yeah. He's fine. He'll be just fine.
He just needs to get home.]
no subject
no subject
He just shrugs.]
no subject
It's at this point Slugger steps in Pokey's path, blocking him from moving forward. He isn't demanding any more answers, he's just trying to get Pokey to look him in the eye.]
Look up.
no subject
He looks up.
The skin above and around his eyes is badly damaged. Melted, to a point, and drooping in front of his eyes, somewhat blinding him. The scarring on his neck isn't obvious due to the scarf.
He quickly looks down after Slugger has him look up.]
no subject
... ... ...
Then, the shock becomes rage. Pokey may not see Slugger's expression change and darken, but he will hear it in his voice when he next speaks, a low and dangerous tone.]
Who. Did. This.
no subject
The sound is low. Breathy. Pretty much nothing.
He can't talk Slugger. He hopes you get the point and he doesn't have to show you the scar across his neck.]
no subject
Finally, he steps aside and allows Pokey to move, though he intends to stay nearby.]
no subject
And then his head hurts more, and the world blurs again, going from straight lines to a bunch of jumbled ones, like watching a house made of building blocks get swept away and the pieces just hang in mid-air instead of dropping entirely. Random. Chaotic. Jumbled.
He stops again, and plans to fall. Or did. But he's so afraid that if he falls right now he won't have the strength to get up.
So he swallows his pride and tries to move his arm to hook around Slugger and steady himself.]
no subject
His first thought is to guide Pokey home with him, but now that Geigue is living with them, there's just no way he can do that. Slugger tries to keep his voice calm for Pokey's sake.]
I'll take you where you want to go.
no subject
He isn't really sure where he wants to go. Home, he guesses. He thinks he'd like to sleep. But he doesn't really know how to convey that.
He stare for a moment before pointing in a vague direction, meant to be where he thinks his house is. It's the only thing he can think to do.]
no subject
Home? Got it.
[Not letting go, he prepares to time his movements with Pokey's.]
no subject
And closes his eyes. Thinking. No. This isn't the right direction he just.
He doesn't know. Does he even want to go home. He's so tired. and scared. And he doesn't know if he's honestly going to make it.
He stops in mid-step, looking back up at Slugger before wrapping his arm around him a little tighter.
Let him stay with you. Please. Just let him stay with you for the moment. That's all he wants. He doesn't care where he goes, just as long as he isn't alone.]
no subject
In that moment, Slugger is just as scared as Pokey is. What does he do? How does he help his best friend? What if he can't? He doesn't want to be alone, either. As the thoughts pass through his mind, Slugger's grip on Pokey tightens. His other arm joins in holding Pokey up, drawing him nearer, and his cheek comes to rest on the crown of Pokey's head. His own head has begun to spin now as the dull ache inside spreads from back to front. It fills his vision with patchy translucent black spots. Slugger closes his eyes, waiting for it to pass.]
no subject
He likes the feeling, either way, and with his one good arm increases his grip on his best friend. And thinks for a moment.
His head is cloudy, and he can barely concentrate, but he looks back up at Slugger. Slowly, he moves his hand to point at Slugger's eyes, and then slowly, with his finger, traces the word "brother" on Slugger's shoulder, hoping he gets it.]
no subject
Yeah. [he smiles] I know.
[His hold remains firm as he reaches up to place a hand lightly on the side of Pokey's hooded head.]
no subject
And smiles. Not a mischievous one, or a plotting one, like he so often wore. A full, genuine smile. Gently, he increased his grip on his friend and laid his head against Slugger's hand, standing and breathing for a few moments.
He took one last, deep breath.
And then stopped breathing entirely.]
no subject
Pokey? Pokey, wait! Don't go! [He knows it's no use and his pleads soon trail off.] Don't go...
[With the body of his best friend slumped against him, Slugger stands there still holding on, his eyes stinging with tears that soon overflow. He rests his head upon Pokey's and, squeezing his eyes shut, eventually fades away with the lifeless body. At home, in his backyard, Slugger will give Pokey a solemn burial.]
Action: Around Town
It's how he's managed to drag himself out to work. But on the way, he sees the small figure leaning on the pole. Concerned, he heads over:]
Son, y'all right there?
Action: Around Town
And he isn't entirely sure who said that to him.]
Re: Action: Around Town
[By now, Engie's close enough to recognize Pokey, and to notice the extent of the disfiguring. A look of horror appears on his face.]
Pokey! What happened to ya!? Come on, we've gotta git you to a Dispenser, it can help! Can ya walk? Lean on me son.
no subject
He can walk. But he won't take medical supplies that could be used to help others aside from those in the pharmacy. He doesn't want to go through the possibility of them being wasted on him and him dying.
Or the unstated part that he thinks using them on him would just be a waste. So stubborn refusal it is.]
no subject
Pokey, ya need medical attention! Ya need help!
Around Town
Pokey?
Around Town
He nods. Yes. He's fine.]
Re: Around Town
Rough day?
Re: Around Town
He just shrugs, shaking his head a little and peering at Death from under the hood of his coat.]
Action ☆ Around Town
Pokey? You okay?
Action ☆ Around Town
Pokey looks around a moment, confused, until he sees Rika. He quickly lowers his head again, and just nods a little.]
