#5 - Carnival

[He'd spent a few hours at the Carnival.  Those few hours turned into an entire day of trying to keep people out of the Freak Show and off the rides.  The drones didn't listen at all.]

There is definitely something wrong with that Carnival!  I've never seen--

Nobody should go to it.  Again, nobody should visit the Carnival.  Please don't!

[It's very easy to hear that he's frustrated and basically disturbed by all of it.]

[Action] - Mayfield Police 

[He'll go to the police station.  If there is another police officer there, he will ask them to help him.  If not, he'll leave.]

My spirits were never very high anyway. But I manage.

I teach science in the high school here. At least that passes the time.

That does sound like a very fulfilling job, it really does!

They've given me the job of a police officer here. It's hard work.

[Only because he actually tries very hard to be a good policeman.]

It's something. I'd rather be at home doing science there. But I suppose you have to take what you can get.

Do the police even do anything here?

[It's a good thing she can't see this terribly sad face he's making, all crumbling and hurt now.]

I try very hard every day to make sure that everybody is safe.

[Everybody. Everybody. Nevertheless, her complaint is legit.]

[It's very good, because she'd probably laugh.]

Well that's a rather impossible task considering where we are.

I'll take that as a no then?

There's very little that's impossible, at least where I'm from.

[After all, he can fly. Anyway, he'll sound a bit less sad, and more insistent.]

You can choose to speak badly about the police force, but that does not make me want to help you any less, no less at all!

[And right back to sounding happy, and rather determined.]

Congratulations.

Though I wasn't speaking badly about them, I was just pointing out the obvious. The police have no power here and keeping people safe is impossible.

Nothing will stop me from trying, even if I didn't have that job - nothing at all.

Because if I see a person in need and don't help them - who will?

Very few people.

Why do you want to help people I mean?

[Did. . . did she not hear what he said? He'll say it again just to be sure.]

Again, if I see a person in need and don't help them - who will?

[GLaDOS, can't you understand how heartbreaking it is to see someone in need. . .]

[She rolls her eyes.]

Why do you care? What does it matter to you if they don't get help?

And if you repeat that same stupid phrase again I'm hanging up.

[Wow GLaDOS, that stings. But he'll fight on, thinking a long moment over her question. ]

Well, you know, I feel as though the minute someone is calling for help, they have done all they can and it isn't enough. It fills me with sadness to know that they have had that kind of hardship.

[He'll sigh.] Their own hands aren't enough, so they need someone else, someone else who might have stronger hands right at that very moment.

Could you imagine what it would be like for them, if those hands never came? Can you truly imagine it? Haven't you ever needed somebody else's help?

[Caroline is not helping, pointing back to quite a few times. GLaDOS's voice is more icy. Stop it, stop making her remember.]

Yes. I can, thank you.

And I have, but I never received any help. Everything I did, I did myself.

No one helped me so, I fixed my own problems.

[With killing people.]

I'm sorry that you had to face that alone.

[He is incredibly sincere.]

Because you know how that feels, how can you resist being the person who does give help to someone who is alone?

[He's been both; he knows what it's like.]

[And yet she doesn't believe him.]

Many reasons.

I'm busy, I don't care, I don't like humans, I have tests to be running, science is more important then people, there's no one else in my facility at home save for two testing robots and I can't leave.

Pick all of them or one of them. It works out the same.

. . . it sounds pretty different than where I'm from, it really does.

[Sheepish much.]

But I hope you'll consider helping when you can.

[He's just trying to be encouraging.]
