[ Garage - Morning ]
[ Vader is at work today, filling the time with, well... actual work. Though it isn't unusual for him to not be talkative, his coworkers might notice he seems unfocused and distracted. More than once he's jammed a finger, walloped himself on the head or dropped a tool in an engine and had to fish it out, muttering vituperous imprecations in Huttese while he felt around for the wrench he'd been handling. He won't ask for help- his pride is a heavy, almost suffocating weight.
At the moment he's at it again, reaching deep into the engine of a Buick out front, the sun beating on his back. He minds the latter very little, Earth's single sun not a patch on Tattoine's twin stars. Metal bites against his knuckles, but he's not to be deterred, frowning in concentration. It would be so much easier if he had the Force at his beck and call. ]
[ 1127 Taylor - Afternoon ]
[ He nearly trips over himself going up the steps, pausing at the front door and ready to ring the bell. But...he finds himself drawing up short, uncertain. Despite his sudden excitement, his thoughts keep returning to the words of his former master, delivered from his wife. That was a day he wasn't soon to let himself forget. ]
[ Diner - Early Evening ]
[ Quite honestly he's not all that hungry, so he spends a great deal of time hemming and hawwing over what to order, ignoring anyone who might be behind him in line.
Darth Vader is not a great customer. Who knew. ]
[ 3474 Erwin - Late Evening ]
[ Neighbors might see a figure climbing his way out onto the roof from an upper window, before carefully scooching his way up to a spot where he can sit comfortably.
Vader's doing what he does best, brooding. Folding his arms over the knees he's pulled to his chest, he watches the moon rise, bright and shiny like a silver dollar hanging in the sky. ]

We... served together on Praesitlyn during the Clone Wars.

What'd you think of him?

[ Dredging up even more old memories is not how he wanted to spend his day, Horn. ]

... I was fond of him.
[ It goes deeper than that, much deeper. Anakin trusted Halcyon to a degree different than he did even Obi-Wan. Halcyon was like him, married in secret, with a wife and children... It was something that kept him going, that what he and Padmé had done was only too right. ]
After he died I grieved for him, for his family.
[ He's really saying too much, curt as his responses are and neutral as his expression is. Enough Happy Share-time Vader. ]

Well, perhaps a Corran of less than a couple months ago would have sentenced Vader as a lost cause but the Corran now doesn't completely write him off. Not after Luke didn't even punish Kyp for destroying an entire planet. Corran didn't agree with him on that but there was something there about redemption that he knew he had to learn.]
If it helps, his son lived and had me as a kid.
But I know you, Anakin Skywalker and I'm not afraid to say that I'm a Jedi. My training may have been completely different from the things Jedi in your time had to go through but I did train.

Not for the first time, Vader feels the pricking of guilt. He shakes his head at Corran's statement, realizing he's not even certain what he's objecting to. That he's used a name with a history that only seems to be clinging more firmly with each passing day? That he's volunteered information which, were they in Vader's respective universe, would have had the Sith Lord immediately moving to terminate him as swift and efficiently as possible? ]
Stop. Stop.
[ He shouldn't care, he shouldn't care about any of this, about everything Obi-Wan said in the guise of Padmé; about Nejaa Halcyon and the living legacy that stands before him, declaring to the man who mercilessly slaughtered the Order that he's proud to be a Jedi. Proud.
It jolts him abruptly, realizing that if Horn is Halcyon's grandchild and the Jedi have resurfaced in the future without consequence, then what has happened to the Empire? Despite the heat of the day, Vader feels himself go cold. There are questions to ask, questions he doesn't want to know the answers for. Not now. ]
I don't want to hear anymore.

[But he knows something now. At the least, if he gets in a bad situation with Vader, there is a way. Maybe not to win but to survive.
Yeah, Corran knows he's way in over his head but oh boy arrogance.]
How about I leave you to dwell on that.

Because I'm through with listening to a Padawan. You're nothing like Nejaa, Horn.

Good thing your own kids turned out nothing like you.
o snap that was beautiful
My child is dead.
[ It's the despair that only a father could know, the loss of a son or a daughter. He would never know them, never know their face, never hold them and love them... and it's his own fault.
Vader stalks away like a man possessed, leaving the car and Corran to their own respective devices. He's through with all of it for the time being, if he doesn't get away now he'll certainly explode. ]
