[Neville is checking the post, not quite sure what will show up this time.

He opens the package and just stares.

Candy wrappers. Droobles gum.

The ones he saved from his mum.

All he can do is stare.]

[Neville is bound and determined to be as useful as he can. Things are getting worse. So he's practicing as many charms as he can think of.]

[ She looks at the wrappers, and sighs. She can feel his reaction to the wrappers, but not the reason for it. ]

[ She looks at the wrappers again. ]

[ Ilsa puts a hand on his shoulder. ]

[He picks up one of the wrappers]

[ She looks a little worried, ] Something that isn't yours?

No... they're mine... my mum... Gran always told me to just throw them out, but I couldn't.

They're a connection, aren't they?

Mum gives them to me when I go to visit her and Dad. She... she saves them for me. Just for me.

[ Ilsa's brow furrows, ] She can't, can she.

[He shakes his head]

These are the only sign she even recognizes me... I'm not sure she knows who I am, though.

[ Ilsa moves around to put an arm around his shoulders. ]

There's a part of her that knows, and is trying to connect to you.

I hope so.

Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better...

[But that's a terrible thing to think]

It's part of the process, grieving for someone who... might not be there anymore, even if they are still alive. The hope, even if it is a tiny grain of it, that they could get better, but dealing with the reality of where they are now is still a common factor.

I never even got to know them, really. I probably shouldn't ask the people here as much as I do but... they knew them. When they were... then.

It's all right to be curious, but remember that your parents still care for you, even in their current condition.

I... I hope so. I was just a baby, when it all happened.

It's hard to think of them as the people others knew... but at their core, there is the spark that it them is still there.

[ She gives him a slight hug. ]

She's showing you, as best she can, that you are special to her.

I think... I think that's why I've never been able to throw them out, even when Gran told me to.

Your Gran may think it's something that upsets you, or it may be disturbing to her. After all, it's likely she knew your mother to be a different person.

I can't really say for sure without meeting her, but your grandmother, is she strict?

[ Ilsa gives him a gentle smile. ] In nearly every case, it's not out of spite, but that they really do believe you can do just about everything.

Took me going through med school to figure it out, myself.

We're an old Pureblood family. Not like some of them but there are still... certain expectations.

And Mum and Dad were these amazing Aurors before Bellatrix Lestrange got her hands on them.

[ Ilsa nods. ] It might do you good to talk to someone who knew them when they were younger. Not everyone comes into existence in full battle readiness like Athena.
