ADVENTURE 003: Jobs are Dull

[Sherlock had heard about the possibility of being droned, so here he is at work. And he's actually, you know, working. He's not here for his own gain, nor to do research. And he's actually pointing customers in the right direction, after telling them something about themselves they'd rather keep hidden. He doesn't sound like he wants to help. He sounds more like he's here under threat of punishment - which is pretty much true.]

[Sherlock is reading a book - or pretending to. He's actually watching drones and people milling about. He's hoping to try to think his way out of this place. And he's hoping by observing others, he'll learn something.]

[Sherlock, funny doesn't suit you, stick to ice.]

Obviously it doesn't work that way.

[At least you can count on Holland to be blunt.]

Clearly. So, I'm owned by another like you. What does that mean?

[Sherlock isn't sure he likes that idea.]

Maybe not much, to you.

Even if England is a jerk.

[Sherlock looks bemused at the last remark.]

So, you're personifications of countries. How does that work?

[Seriously, he needs to understand this.]

I'm just the Netherlands.

[What doesn't this guy understand. . .]

I've lived a long time.

[Well it's a bit odd to think of... countries as people, rather than people making up countries.]

Your age is a matter of some debate. If you go strictly by the name, then I would be forced to ask which "Netherlands" you are. For instance, if you are "The Kingdom of the Netherlands" then you've only been around since 1830. If you go by "Austrian Netherlands" then you would only be 81. But then, I suppose, you would be dead, since that no longer exists. If you're the actual landmass, then you are roughly the same age as every other landmass on the planet.

[Sherlock nods. It helps a bit.]

And do you change your name every time you are invaded or a new treaty is signed?

[Erm. Yes, these things do matter to Sherlock.]

I don't usually change it. I wasn't the one who chose my name in the first place, it's just what I was given by my citizens.

Whatever makes them happy.

Well, not like you would have much choice, by the sound of it....

[Maybe he would, Sherlock really doesn't understand this at all.]

I guess I'm okay with what they picked.

[His people come first, after all.]

[Erm, no he doesn't offer his hand, he doesn't even remember to introduce himself.]

Depends on your definition of 'long' - I've been here about a month.

So that's hardly any time.

If you get a chance to read about the town, you probably should.

[Sherlock nods.]

Some individuals have been... very forthcoming.

[gezellig]

If you don't know what this town is, you'll have a lot of trouble.

. . . not that we really know what it actually is, or if it's actually real.

[He'll sigh.]

But doing things here can be trouble even if they wouldn't be somewhere else.

[Sherlock offers a small smile.]

And some things that would be trouble elsewhere don't seem to be an issue here.

[He's referring to his drug use.]

[Almost a smirk.]

Somehow they don't seem to worry about people driving tanks down the road, or having sailing ships in their backyard.

A guy shouldn't have three tanks drive over his tulips in one year.

I was referring to something a little more home spun...

[He breaks off his mouth finally catching up to his brain.]

Three tanks? Really? What did they have against tulips?

[Because, well, why else would someone repeat the process?]

By three different people.

I think they were careless.

[Sherlock sounds doubtful.]

But... Tulips!

[Sherlock's not sentimental, but doesn't believe in causing needless destruction either.]

I don't think it was.

[Did he mention that his entire front yard was tulips? Maybe not.]

[That part might make a difference to Sherlock.]

But they would have had to drive across the lawn as well. And a tank! Probably the neighbours' lawns.

[He frowns for a moment.]

Once is an accident - sometimes. Three times is purposeful.
