ADVENTURE 003: Jobs are Dull

[Action; Pharmacy.]

[Sherlock had heard about the possibility of being droned, so here he is at work. And he's actually, you know, working. He's not here for his own gain, nor to do research. And he's actually pointing customers in the right direction, after telling them something about themselves they'd rather keep hidden. He doesn't sound like he wants to help. He sounds more like he's here under threat of punishment - which is pretty much true.]

Need help with anything?

[Action; City Bench.]

[Sherlock is reading a book - or pretending to. He's actually watching drones and people milling about. He's hoping to try to think his way out of this place. And he's hoping by observing others, he'll learn something.]

[ He just shrugs ] You can't help who you are. I won't ask you too.

[ But, happy for a subject change, he'll glance over at one of the drones passing by. ]

The Drones? They're empty. They only react when you approach them or their approached by other drones. They, at least, seem to be immune to the milk-or else don't react to it. If you try to talk to them your conversation will probably only go in circles. They might only be pieces of data that haven't been fully programed yet.. but there's also a chance they act like a security cameras.

Either way... they might be a way out....

[Sherlock pauses.]

Do we remember anything when we become drones?

They might lead us to a way out, at least. If the Mayor, Smith-san and Zemekis are like us in the sense that they're stuck here too, then it stands to reason they too would need some form nutrion. Oddly enough though, no one ever sees them going to the grocery store or any of the restaurants. I asked around about people possibly trying to hide their face but I didn't really expect to find anything like that. It makes sense though, if the drones can be used to accomplish what the others can't without stepping out of a safety zone-like stockpile food.

Ah.. It depends on reason for the droning-When I returned home I was droned but I don't remember anything about it-probably because I wasn't actually here- but if it's a punishment then you usually remember it.

So then droning might be the best possible solution at this point. How can one get droned?

[Yes, Sherlock is formulating a research study.]

Easy enough, just skip work for three days. But, if you're wanting the kind droning process that sends you home, I haven't yet found what triggers that. Or else I'd have gone back to Ran by now.

The point of doing this is to get home - permanently. Skipping work for three days is easy enough.

[Sherlock is looking thoughtful.]

But droned, I have no control over my actions, right? I'll be like one of the Cleavers.

[He grimaces slightly at that thought.]

Well then, I can't help you. Like I said, I haven't yet figured out what triggers the return trip home.

I don't mean the trip home. If I'm stuck here and this is a mystery. I intend to solve it.

[He might sound a little annoyed.]

[ Raises an eyebrow. ]

If you wanted to leave the mystery unsolved, especially something like this place, I'd be convinced you're not really Sherlock Holmes.

And you are pointing out the obvious again. I thought you were supposed to be good at this. What does my interest in mystery have to do with the Drones?

[Sherlock is giving a chance here, Conan.]

Nothing. I just thought it sounded like-oh. Never mind.

[ Just going to step around that subject entirely. Sherlock could probably guess what he meant anyway. ]

In the meantime, I have this for you to look at.

[ He pulls his notepad out where he's copied down everything he heard from the recording while trapped in that other part of Mayfield: ]

[ -couldn't be better. He's given us everything we could have wanted, and more. Why do you have to go and ruin it with talk like this? You always do this!

I'm just saying, what if Grey was on to something? We didn't really give it much thought, but now that we have a chance to calm down and really think about it-

-we'll what, exactly? Go to Johnathan and tell him thanks, it's been a swell week, but we'd like to come back down to earth now? How do you think the poor man would take that, after all the work he's done? Did you even see the carnival outside?

It's the carnival that got me thinking about this. I didn't realize just how much power we were giving this fellow. If he can conjure something like that out of thin air, who knows what he could do to us if he felt up to it?

Charles! You're acting like he's some bloodthirsty communist or something. The man is a saint, and we owe him our lives. I won't have you embarrassing me in front of the other survi- citizens like this.

I suppose you're right. Even if we did want to go back, I suppose that's out of the question now...

Now that's more like it. Why don't we go to the carnival today? You need to relax- (too much static)

Could be important. Who were the people talking?

There's a high chance anything found during that weird carnival is just a red-herring. But, the man, Charles, is probably Jack Smith-san. I never got the woman's name but I think she might be the lady known as Mrs. Johnson. If you ask the drones about her, they give the impression that she's.. ah-um.. loose.

Could it be Lucy in adult form? And Jack Smith... the Mayor?

[Sherlock can't really keep everyone straight just yet.]

No, Lucy and the Milkman are probably the same person-no one's ever seen the milkman, just heard him over the phone. The Mayor was first introduced to Mayfield as John Doe but it was later discovered his real name is MacCready and the Librarian is probably Annie-san. I'll try to find out later tonight.

There was a police Sherif who's real name was Evan Olney, and Jack Smith-san's wife was originally a lady known as Jane Smith. Her real name was Samantha Achewood. She and Olney-san were both killed.

I still have yet to match up identities to Billy-san, Jack Smith-san, the Mailman, and Johnson-san.

That's disturbingly confusing.

Ordinarily, yes. But for some reason those two and Richard Grey-san did not come back.

Where are they buried?

[If they're dead, the bodies must be somewhere.]

I don't know about Grey-san, he might not actually be dead. But Achewood-san and Olney-san were buried in the park. I only know that because I talked to the person that buried them.

Unfortunately when I went to check and see if the bodies were still there a Carnival had been up in the park and the area labeled 'freak show' had their bodies on display.

But, that may not have been their bodies. So it's possible they're not dead.

[Considering what Sherlock was in the process of doing before he came here, he would rather run tests on said bodies.]

It's possible... have to dig up the grave to know for sure...

Indeed. I'm surprised no one has done that yet.

I was going to do it, but then that carnival got in the way. Not long after that I had more pressing concerns back home to deal with.
