[02] Second job
{Action - Open to housemates and neighbors}
-- location: 848 Goldberg Street
-- time: Backdated to Mother's Day, late morning
[Climbing out the window to escape the drones in the house has become a regular thing for Mal and he's now reaping what he's sowed by repairing the gutter, half dangling off the edge of the roof. His tailbone remembers that fall well.
He's hoping no one saw it when it happened yesterday but there are just so many neighbors around. Fat chance.]
{Action - Open to all}
-- location: Olney's Tavern
-- time: Backdated to Mother's Day, evening
[Now the real work begins. Mal's serving up drinks at the tavern, and to be truthful, he rather enjoys his job. The only downside is the strange people he sometimes has to be friendly with.]
Howdy. What can I get for you?

Howdy. What can I get for you?
Olney's
no subject
[He begins whipping up as fruity and girly a drink as he can manage, and is about to add a cherry, then pauses an gives Kaylee a strangely intense look.]
I can go out n' find a strawberry instead if'n that's what you want.
no subject
If you got 'em.
no subject
[Yes, leave the bar and run to the market in the middle of his shift. Mal sees nothing wrong with this if it means making Kaylee happy.]
no subject
no subject
[He vaults right over the bar... yeah, the door was ten feet away... and heads for the exit.]
no subject
[The captain is acting strange]
no subject
Got 'em!
[He says this like he's struck gold.]
In a moment, folks.
[Once behind the bar again he opens the carton and drops a few strawberries into Kaylee's incredibly fruity, girly drink and sets it on the bar in front of her on top of a napkin.]
There you are, darlin'. [He huffs and puffs a bit more and wipes the sweat from his brow.]

What in this gorram hell d'you think yer doin'?
no subject
[Cade says this all as if it's the most obvious thing in the world and you are very silly for asking.]
no subject
[Mal isn't a supervisor or anything but he's got a gun and to him that's even better.]
no subject
no subject
Oh, we can make this a competition if'n you so like, but the firearm in my holster'd like to put a hole in yer pretty face says otherwise. N'normally I take care only to kill when absolutely necessary but what good fortune'a ours, death 'round here ain't such an inconvenience as it would be back home. If you think I'd hesitate to fill you up with lead you best rearrange your thoughts, son.
[Bully? Nah. Mal just really wants to make this Mother's Day special for these ladies.]
no subject
"You would recklessly risk the lives of all the women in this place!? VILE CUR! TAKE THIS!"
[And with 'Take this!' Cade throws a mean right hook at Mal! Look out captain, Cade may be a fop, but he's been in no shortage of tavern brawls!]

Olney's
Could I get a fuzzy navel?
no subject
[With a charming smile he begins mixing up the drink behind the bar.]
Hey, ain't I seen you here before?
no subject
no subject
[He sets her drink up on the bar on top of a napkin and gives her a wink.]
This one's on me. An' if you got yer pretty eye set on somethin' other you just let me know. Anything at all.
no subject
[She takes the drink with a smile.]
I've always liked meeting people. What did you do at home instead of tending bar?
no subject
[Mal is vaguely reminded of Kaylee and it makes him smile.]
Whatever I could do to keep afloat. Doin' jobs for folk n'such, some of 'em legal n'some of 'em not so legal. Though, the illegal ones tended to outnumber the rest.
[There's a lapse in orders so Mal leans on the bar and lets himself enjoy the conversation.]
What 'bout yerself?
no subject
no subject
So you, uh... are you the "always busy" kinda death? I can't imagine you got much to do 'round here seein' as how death ain't real permanent.
[He smirks as if he's just joking.]
no subject
Argh, I fail at html
Right. Because you're Death. The Death.
[He seems to be saying this to cement it in his mind.]
...
Wait, you're the Death? As in, I'll be seein' ya when that bullet finally catches up to me?
Re: Argh, I fail at html
Olney's Tavern
Give me a scotch.
no subject
[He gives her a little wink. Hey, he likes women who drink straight liquor.]
no subject
Straight up. Ice only dilutes the liquor.
Olney's
Something sweet would be nice, Captain.
[Yeeeeeeeah still a little
verawkward.]no subject
[He's a bit surprised to see her in the bar.]
Hey, no problem. In fact, you know what? It's on me. I still feel real bad about what happened in the park and you were probably right about everything and if there's anything else I can get you, you just say it outright, okay?
[He just said most of that all in one breath. Oh, and here's the kicker. There wasn't a hint of sarcasm in his voice. He was as genuine as he's ever been.]
no subject
Um, all right. Thank you... [She hesitates for a moment before blurting out:] Are you all right?
no subject
Great! Enjoyin' this fine day.
...
Are you alright?
[He just loves turning the tables, and he even tops it off with a look of concern.]
no subject
[She swallows and then carefully climbs up onto one of the bar stools and soothes her skirt around her legs.]
So... [This was a little awkward.]
no subject
When we first got here, I--... my first and only thought was keepin' you safe. [He "corrects" himself and gets busy polishing the bar with a rag.] Keepin' my crew safe.
Just makin' sure you ain't wantin' for anything. Well, 'sides wantin' to go home. I ain't real capable of that yet.
no subject
She smiles at him as she rests her hands on the bar.]
Well I'd be lying if I said this place wasn't at all disconcerting... But it could be worse. We could all be beating each other for no good reason. [She's teasing him, she only hopes he gets that.]
no subject
[He seems to get a little more serious now.] 'Sides. I coulda handled things a bit different. We was both put on by a lot of stress an'... things coulda gone better.
[No, Mal did not just apologize. You're hearing things.]
no subject
Slowly she looks up again.]
I believe we both could have handled things differently. [She smiles softly.] I... I shouldn't have avoided you for so long. That wasn't fair to you, I'm sorry.
848 Goldberg Street...Late!post is late. :P
So you're a repair-man as well, are you?
no subject
[He shrugs with a smirk as he drops a screw in the grass.]
Gai si...
Hey, uh... you need anything? [This isn't out of the blue at all.]
no subject
...No.
