event: break-in

[Anyone who drops by the dairy between the hours of three PM and five PM on Tuesday will find that the door's been unlocked. Even though the door's shut, there's a strange humming sound coming from inside the building.

Careful if you want to try to peek inside, though. You may not like what you find.]

[Slugger whispers in response to Jade's question.] I've hit it before.

[He did tell her he liked hitting. And this time he's hoping to get another crack at it. Keeping a steady pace, he gravitates toward the glow. Unlike before, he has yet to feel what he'd felt the last time he was here.]

Be careful... [ She looks between the two, following at a slower pace, creeping behind them and finding herself unable to look away from the glow. ]

What happened when you hit it?

It exploded and tiny lights floated out. They were souls -- I could hear them.

[As they get closer, they'll be able to see that the glowing is coming from a translucent forcefield. Within it is what appears to be the same enormous steel vat and generator from last time; the only things new are the forcefield and a sign reading DO NOT TOUCH that has been taped up to the front of the vat.]

[Pokey just stops for a moment, and stares at it. That probably...is not good. He looks over to Slugger.]

Was that there last time?

[echidna]

[ While they talk, Jade steps closer to the forcefield, the glow reflecting in her glasses. She reaches out as though to touch it, fingertips stopping just short of the forcefield. ]

[The forcefield feels warm near her fingers.]

[strike_you_out]

[Slugger, too, approaches the translucent field, examining it and holding his hand near it much like Jade. In doing so, he shakes his head in response to Pokey's question.]

No. There was only the vat and the generator. ...And the voices.

[He'll begin to step closer to the generator, trying to spot the pipe he struck last time.]

[Oh well that's awesome let him just freak out a moment as he tries to pull your hands away.]

Are you two morons?

[ She jumps, jerking her hand away from the forcefield and his grasp. Ultimately she doesn't say anything about (stupidly) almost touching it, though she does rub absently at her wrist. ]

So what do we do?

[At Pokey's request, Slugger lowers his hand as well. He doesn't have an answer for Jade and simply continues to observe the two machines. Oddly, he hasn't heard any voices or felt any presences. But more importantly, he hasn't sensed a trace of any of the suffering he'd felt before.

Come to think of it, perhaps he does have an answer for Jade.]
