[ 20 April, Afternoon, the front garden of 1490 Kramden Road ]

[ The front lawn has been making the slow transition from carpet of green to a plot ready to plant. Ilsa has been adding the seedlings from the kitchen window as they are hardy enough.

However, this morning while leaving to go to work, she spotted something she did not plant in the beds. It did not conform to anything she knew, and at her lunch break, she had checked the library references which had no more information on the plant.

So this afternoon, she changed into her halter top and shorts, and started weeding. She has been careful enough to wear gloves, and to put them in a bucket for disposal, but that doesn't stop them from affecting her. She hasn't noticed that her shadow now includes bat-wings, of sufficient span to be useful.... ]

[ He sighs. He knows all too well about witch hunts. ] I understand witch hunts. I'd like to believe there's a world without them, though.

[ Ilsa's smile is wistful. ] There's multiple dimensions out there. I have to believe the odds favor more than one of them outgrowing the fear. Maybe even our own, eventually.

I'm optimistic. I want for everyone where I am from to be able to leave in peace - side by side with mutants.

[ooeeooahah]

[ Ilsa nods, filing his use of the term away for later. ] I hope so... [ Then she giggles, ] It may take a little longer for the mages to come out. Considering how many people don't have a good grasp of the laws of physics, the laws of magic might throw them.

[ Laughs. ] I can't imagine. Things that extraordinary people do often defy the laws of science people have come to learn are true as well.

[ooeeooahah]

Silly, really. The Newtonian laws of physics mirror the first laws of magic. Not like someone's got to understand string theory to follow it.

[ Ilsa sips her tea, and makes sure Charles isn't drinking when she asks, quietly ] Are you hiding, as well?

I am a Mutant. [ Taps fingers to his head. ] A telepath. Normally, at least.

[ Ilsa smiles, nodding. She has no physical expression indicating surprise or distaste, either. ] Not to worry, it will likely come back. I had my empathy back in pieces, receptive first, then the broadcast.

It's been jarring on a good day. When you live most of your life like this, I'm sure you understand. [ Of course, he didn't expect her to be surprised. Not after what she had told him. He was comfortable because of what she shared, and how he was able to ask more questions about it. ]

The experience of regaining abilities is different for a lot of people, but just in case, if you get an odd letter or package, especially after the town's gone mad, you might want to have company when you open it.

[ Ilsa shrugs again. ]

My empathy letters weren't traumatic, but when I got my Sight back? [ She shakes her head. ] I was dazzle-blinded for a day. That's even with me not getting a tenth of the power back that I had back home. That's another thing that some of us have had happen, the strength levels aren't always the same.

I imagine it will feel like the days when the ability first surfaced. Or that is my expectation. I'll have an easier time adjusting if I expect the worst. [ He laughs a little, and decides to shift the subject away from himself. ]

There must be many here with abilities.

Some more obvious than others, yes. There are the ones who are inventors, whose tools get returned to them rather than pieces of their brains. Then there's the ones who are able to make cat's cradle with string theory. Tarvek's one of those, but he is still regaining his abilities.

I wish I could say I understand, but I don't. I'm not accustomed to living in places where so many individuals like myself exist. [ He moves a hand through his hair. He simply means 'powered'; not necessarily mutants. ]

I know, it's kind of like going to summer camp, and realizing everyone there is in on the secrets you have to keep at school.

[ See that grin, Charles? That's a happy thought. ]

[ Laughs. Yeah, that's exactly what he thinks, too. ] Exactly that. It's reassuring that everyone started where I am, too. Without their abilities, but still - somehow, regaining them.

I actually got some good out of getting my abilities back in pieces. Though it at first, it was just me making the best of a bad thing, I was able to figure out what abilities were related to which bloodline.

It will be a learning experience, I'm sure. [ Nervous chuckle. ] I mean, I know I'll enjoy figuring it out.

[ Ilsa hesitates a moment, before asking the next question. ]

How are things working out for you, at the house they assigned?

I appreciate the offer. I do the same thing at home. [ Small smile. Nods. ] It's going well. Quiet, enough. I don't like asking for help, though. And I get to teach here.

[ooeeooahah]

[ Ilsa's gaze turns inward a moment, as she thinks. When she does speak, she looks directly at him. ]

I've got some experience in construction. Mama has... a history of limited mobility, and I grew up in a house that was under renovation in one way or another every summer.

[ Now she smiles, just a little. ] From what I learned, if we use the materials and tools available here, the alterations are less likely to be reverted. If there's something you need help to make fit your needs, let me know.

That would... [ He looks like he's considering it, but there's not really much to consider. After all, being that he was limited, anything that could make it easier will be fantastic. ]

I think that unless they decide to give me my legs back, then that would be fantastic.

I think if you were chair-bound in your last memory from home, it's... not likely. [ She shakes her head. ] There's half a chance they could have sent you here with them, and taken them away later.

On the other hand, what would you like to change about the house first?

[ A small smile. He didn't expect it. ] There's some alterations near my bedroom that would be the most helpful. [ Particularly steps. ] Thank you for this.

Bad enough we're here, but if we adapt this place to fit us, we aren't conforming to the place, hm?

Well, I fail to see how I could live normally and fit in if I can't get around.
