Puzzle 34
[726 Anderson Lane.]
[Luke had only been gone a little over three hours, but the way he's stumbling into the house makes it look like he's been gone for a week. The front of his shirt is covered in blood, and he has a nasty bite on his shoulder. Despite that? He doesn't look scared or traumatized, as he usually does with each horrible event the town puts them through.
Instead, he looks really tired.
He darts towards the kitchen, and rummages for something to eat and drink. He's tempted to find someplace to sleep, but there's still a few things he needs to do first. The first thing he needs to do is make a phone call...]
[Phone.]
What all was found in those portals? What did everyone see? The more you can tell me, the better. We ought to start making a record of our discoveries as soon as possible.
[Around town.]
[After a fresh change of clothes, Luke doesn't look that much better, but at least he's not covered in blood anymore. His first goal is to check on the people he traveled with in the void and make sure they all came back in one piece. While he's mostly interested in checking up on people he knows, he'll stop for just about anyone.
When he's finished making sure everyone is okay, he'll go pay a visit to a certain sea creature at the lake.]
[462 Stone Street - Late night]
[The event may be over, but Luke's paranoia gets the better of him. He's spent most of his day fighting sleep and stalking his Mayfield family just in case they don't get eaten by a glitch or something. But even as he tries to go to bed, he still keeps waking up in the middle of the night thanks to some very nasty nightmares.
Deciding sleep is a lost cause, he slips out of the house in the middle of the night, still in his pajamas. He makes his way over to 462 Stone Street to check up on a certain puzzler. Worried about waking them up, he ends up sitting outside the door like a creeper while he decides if he should knock or not.
Unfortunately his lack of sleep catches up with him, because before he can make a decision, he dozes off on the doorstep of the Nigma family. If Edward or Ema checks outside in the middle of the night, they'll find Luke curled up and fast asleep on the porch.]

He mumbles something along the lines of a thank you before he drifts off to sleep again.]
no subject
Well. That was simple enough.
no subject
Yeah, it was.
[Kiss.]
We should get some sleep, too.

[He'll spare one last look at Luke before leaving the den with Ema, flicking off the lights as he leaves.
Luke didn't have much of a chance to say anything, but Edward's still got a pretty good idea of why it is Luke found himself on their doorstep at such a late hour. But thankfully for all parties involved, the nightmares are over (for the time being). They still have their lives, their sanity. They're not stuck in any weird Voids. They're safe.
Luke is safe.
Night soon turns to morning, and with it come the sounds of morning.
Birds chirping outside. Paperboys on their routes. The drone kids clamoring off to school. Edward insisting that he'll catch up to them later. Cupbords opening and closing, pots and pans being set into place. Idle banter and an occasional argument between Edward and Ema in the kitchen. A fresh pot of coffee brewing.
And eventually, the smell of a delicious home-cooked meal---pancakes, eggs, bacon and toast---will waft its way into the den.]

He pops his head in curiously, before his face brightens at all the food.]
Wow, that smells fantastic!

Besides, there's something warmly attractive about the whole situation, almost as if this family thing weren't just a coincidence of assignment.
Luke's arrival into the kitchen draws her attention away from staring at Edward, and she greets him with a smile.] Hey, good morning. I was starting to worry that you'd sleep through breakfast.
no subject
I had a feeling that he wouldn't.
[And he was right. Fifty points for the Riddler.
Then, to Luke:]
Good morning, Luke.
[Edward takes another moment to transfer this latest batch of pancakes onto a serving plate to the side of the stove before glancing over his shoulder at Luke, offering a grin that's both friendly and incredibly self-satisfied. This is shaping up to be a fine-looking breakfast, if he does say so himself.]
Question: How hungry are you?
no subject
[He's a growing boy who never, ever stops being hungry. Luke goes to take a seat, with a wide grin of his own. He barely remembers what happened last night other then he walked to the Nigma household in his pajamas late in the night, but it wasn't hard to guess judging by the fact he woke up on their couch.
Luckily he doesn't have time to be embarrassed, not when there's delicious food around. It almost felt like he was in a dream still, with all of them eating breakfast together. Like they hadn't been fighting for their lives only a day ago. At Edward's question, he pipes up:]
Very hungry!

She can't imagine what Edward and Luke (what was he thinking, going through that last portal?!) had gone through, but she figures a sense of normalcy and family will help. She'll press Edward for details later, when Luke's out of earshot.]
I know you're on the young side for all of this caffeine, but do you drink coffee at all? We might have tea, if you'd prefer that. Or juice. We definitely have orange juice.
no subject
He's glancing over the food like a vulture.]
Do you have any tea? I don't think I've had coffee before.
