Well, if we figure out how to go back home, maybe we'll figure out a way to bring them back? That and there's the theory that when you're droned, you end up going back home...

It's complicated, but when it happens, the town essentially lets go and the droned person goes back home. The droning victim returns home perfectly fine; think of it as the town making a mistake and occasionally letting some slip past them.
