event: portal four | the mountain

The fourth portal, as might be expected, can be found atop the hill known as Makeout Point. The other side of the portal isn't altogether that much different from the side you're entering from, save for the thicker trees and somewhat darker lighting.

The other side of the portal is significantly colder than the Mayfield side; frost covers the ground, and although it's not quite freezing, you'll want to bundle up. A glance at the sky reveals what you might have been dreading: glitch holes, in varying size, litter the skyline. The sun is hidden behind a set of thick clouds, creating a melancholy atmosphere.

The landscape around you is relatively flat, and you can't see too far beyond the forest ahead of you. It isn't until you turn around, facing the portal that you entered from, that you see the rising slope of the ground. The mountain rises high, higher than you can see from its base. There's a rough, primitive path heading up its slope, and for now simply hiking will be sufficient. As you get further, however, simply walking won't be enough: you're going to have to climb...

Somewhere, closer than you might prefer, a single wolf howls, and is shortly joined by more.

Better get moving.

OK! Then it's gotta be a neon yellow rock the size of... my head or something. It's the only way we'd ever be able to do this.

The important thing is to keep fighting.

[From the tone of his voice, it sounds like he'd be smiling.]

Stay close, then. If they're not normal animals, I've had a lot of experience in fighting strong opponents in these conditions. They can't be any worse than another Undead.

[Hajime once more gives Gentarou a look without immediately saying anything.]

Just stay close.

[He's alert now, at least.]

[It's such a cliché thing to say, especially with the brightness in Hajime's tone. But she doesn't mind hearing it. It actually feels encouraging. And it's not so wrong to want to feel encouraged, right?

Up over another rock she goes.]

I'll stick close. I'll try to back you up. I still haven't gotten back much of my power...

[ He grins pretty wide, obviously impressed ]

Pterodactyl, I never even thought of that. That'll be great if we need a flyer to get to the top, if we can't climb up.

[chalicejoker]

[Hajime nods and keeps on climbing up that mountain. Every so often, he'll glance over to check on Gentarou.]

[His saying that is likely a sign he hung around certain individuals back home for far too long, really...

He nods as they climb.]

I've got enough of mine back that we should be in good shape, then.

[The llama suddenly stops dead.
...Oh, yeah.

He could fly.]

Dude. Why didn't I think of that before?! I can totally just fly up there!

[beat]

Wait, what're we looking for again?

That's not usually how they put us when they're telling us how we should be...

Mementos, but I don't know what they're supposed to look like. We should look everywhere, but it's a mountain.

[ He cranes his neck to look up ]

They could be anything-- a book, a locket. Photographs. I guess just something that doesn't belong here.

...We don't belong here! Can we just go back through the portal and say we count?

[She smiles a little.] These are no rocks. These little darlings are very loyal fighters, they simply haven't hatched yet.

That may be true, but it never hurts to be prepared.

[hawkeward]

That would be nice, wouldn't it. [She crosses her arms over her chest at the mention of the cold, though it doesn't do much to keep her warm.] But I'll be happy so long as we find something worth all this trouble.

Like another one of these portals, maybe. One that leads back to home so you can grab your friends and drag them through.

I like to maintain a positive attitude. [She rolls her shoulders and tilts her head, listening to the howls.] Getting all pessimistic won't help matters, though I'll admit I don't like that sound very much.

That would be easier to see.

[He says while nodding. He...still liked his book idea, but that might be too obvious now that he thinks about it further.]

[hawkeward]

Now, I like to be optimistic, but even I think that's a bit much to hope for. [Mournful sigh.] That would be nice, though.

[He's just giving her a look as he just draws out his black sword strapped to his side.]

Well, we should be careful on how we tread then. I think most people do not like being eaten, I would assume it hurts.

I'd sniff it out, but I think my nose would freeze.

...Alright, you ready to go looking?

Ready! Let's find that....whatever!

[Fist pump'd for emphasis.]

[hawkeward]

No, being eaten isn't fun at all. [It's almost like she's talking from experience.] If it's just wolves, we should be all right... but it's never just anything, is it?

No harm in imagining things as long as you don't let it disappoint you in the end.

I'd rather keep my expectations low. I might be pleasantly surprised that way.

[Fwumph! Just for Gentarou, Beast Boy will become an extra-large extra-fluffy llama. Adventure was a-go.

He'll be too busy paying attention to where he puts his feet to be able to pay much attention to his surroundings, so it was probably up to Gentarou to search.]
