I give up. Does anyone have a good or any recipe for treacle tart? I miss it something fierce, but it's not in any of the cook books I found in this town.

Or any help in actually cooking, for that matter.

Nothing is on fire in the kitchen this time, but the place is a mess, with every bowl and container out on the counter. Lily's taken advantage of her drone mum being at a ladies club to claim the kitchen to herself, and it's not going well.

Magic's been of minimal help so far, and her attempt to bake cookies haven't gone too badly, evident by the appealing smell wafting through the window and outside. It's really everything else.


.: Action outside 1449 Mitchell Rd :.

With a fistful of smooth pebbles in hand, Lily is doing the time honored tradition of flinging one at a time at James's and Sirius's bedroom window. It's also fairly late at night, so she's trying to be quiet about it with varying levels of success.

[Yuki drifts by the kitchen door with her nose to a book as usual. Three steps past the door, she comes to a halt and slowly tilts her head to glance into the disaster zone.]

I haven't burnt anything yet. [Lily doesn't need to see the expression on Yuki's face to sense the disapproval.]

[The girl nods solemnly in agreement before bravely entering the war zone, picking her way through the piles of utensils and clouds of flour. She's not tip-toeing, really, that's just how she always walks.]

[Sliding a plate of reasonably baked cookies down the counter, Lily turns back to her notes, still determined to make a treacle tart from scratch.] They make it look so easy when it's already on a plate.

[Yuki's gaze lingers on the cookies for a moment or two before she heads to a closet in the corner to remove a broom and dustpan.]

They can be purchased in the grocery store.

[This observation is not meant to be a reflection on Lily's culinary skill, of course.]

You can't get that in America. [Lily deflates visibly] I checked the store.

[Yuki glances up and looks confused as she slowly begins to stir up the flour and whatever else has been dripped onto the floor.]

Cookies...?

[bespell]

Treacle tart. [Lily looks over her shoulder with a small frown.] Leave that be. It's my mess and I'll take care of it. [For emphasis, she flicks her wand with a quiet "scourgify", dusting the floor clean.]

[tenderoblivion]

[Ah. Well then. Yuki stands uselessly with the broom and blinks at the now spotless floor.]

'Treacle'...?

[bespell]

It's like sugar and syrup. It tastes really nice, too.

[tenderoblivion]

[She moves to empty the limited contents of the dustbin into the garbage.]

Many sweets consist of sugar and syrup within this town. They are not appropriate?

[bespell]

But they're not treacle tart! It's not the same thing at all.

[Settling on one of the high stools, Lily proceeds to wipe the table.] Have you ever had something that tasted exceptionally good, that you liked eating it better than anything else?

[Yuki shakes her head slowly. Her experience with food generally consists of consuming it as quickly and efficiently as possible when she feels she is in need of energy and ignoring it at all other times.]

[bespell]

[Lily's face fell, somewhat.] Not even ice cream? You like that, right?

[tenderoblivion]

[Another shake of the head.]

...It has never been tried.

[bespell]

Your parents must have been awfully strict.

We need to hit the malt shop soon, then. It's too good not to try at least once.

[tenderoblivion]

[Yuki makes no remark about the 'parents' comment but simply nods in acquiescence. She does best when told what to do, even if the orders are as silly as 'go have ice cream'.]

Is assistance required with the treacle?

Unless you could whip a recipe for it out of thin area, I think I'm stumped.

[Yuki nods a little and turns to wander out of the kitchen.]

[Lily wonders briefly if she's hurt the other girl's feelings, but it's hard to figure out either way without asking, directly.] I'm just exasperated. I didn't mean to snap at you.

[Yuki casts Lily a quizzical glance as she heads out, unsure if she is supposed to respond to that or not. Her soft footsteps can be heard ascending the stairs, after which a period of about three minutes pass before she slowly descends again. She holds a piece of paper in her hands that she places on the kitchen counter before turning once again to go.

It reads:
*1 (9 inch) pie crust pastry
*1 cup golden syrup
*1/4 cup heavy cream
*1 cup bread crumbs
*1 lemon, zested
*2 tablespoons lemon juice

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Press the pie crust pastry evenly into the bottom of a 9-inch pie plate.
2. Mix the syrup, cream, bread crumbs, lemon zest, and lemon juice together in a bowl; pour into the pie crust.
3. Bake in the preheated oven until the filling is set, 35 to 40 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before serving.]
