Noodle Pack 16: Sometimes being responsible means doing the most embarrassing things

[This morning there's a long, rectangular package by the Gumshoe mailbox! Seeing this, Gumshoe recalls a previous letter and grabs it from a top a nearby end table to open them together. He checks the mailbox, and surprise surprise, there's a third small package in there! It's like Christmas!

Gumshoe opens the envelope first to see what it contains and finds it empty.]

Huh... Well that was anticlimactic...

[Suddenly there's a loud clang sound and Gumshoe jumps slightly as he looks at his driveway, where the sound came from. There, sitting on the pavement, is a typical squad car. Sort of. It's in terrible shape, the front caved in and hood stuck open, as well as two of the tires flat and no hubcaps. It obviously has met a wall or pole of some sort. And it did not end well.]

Now what is that...oh. Okay. I remember that now.

[And as if recalling the memory triggers something, Gumshoe rubs his head as he picks up the longer box and opens it. Inside he finds the frequency detector he built.]

Well this sure brings back memories!! ...I wonder what I'd find if I sweeped Mayfield? Maybe later. Let's see what's in the last one!

[Gumshoe gets out the last package and starts to unwrap it. It's kinda odd, it's pretty small. And the package is rather soft, like it's just covering a plastic bag. If he didn't know any better, Gumshoe would think it's something you got out of a vending machine.

And indeed, as that thought hits him, he finally shakes free from the package half of a specially made Swiss Roll. Gumshoe can only just stare.]

Um, Kay, you there? You wouldn't believe what I got in the mail today...

Action B | In and around the Pharmacy | Late afternoon

[Gumshoe feels, with what he has to do tonight, that some preparations are in order, and that is why he is buying something at the pharmacy.

He doesn't look too happy about it. In fact, he looks downright embarrassed about it. Gumshoe isn't really the secretive type, but the entire trip he makes to, inside, and back home from the pharmacy has him looking shifty the entire time. Looking around to make sure no one is around, tucking the small brown bag under his arm in his coat, and him shuffling along with his head down all suggests he's doing something he doesn't want others to see him doing. Do you approach?]

[So. Almost time now. Gumshoe left notes for James and Sirius, even gave a heads up to Margot and Rita if they wanted to sit in on this, though he's not sure if he can handle this if they do. Either way, he figures it's his duty as their temporary father to do this. He's got the bag from the pharmacy on a nearby table, he's got the appropriate fruit on hand if needed. He can do this. It might be embarrassing as hell, but it probably would be best to do this now. Especially when Mayfield might pull that Summer event it has in the past.

Gumshoe's skills might be in question sometimes, but he is a detective. He found out a few details (after the fact) about Jame's date. And again, with the possibility of Mayfield shenanigans approaching, Gumshoe feels the sooner he gets this done, the better.

So that's why he's sitting in the living room facing the couch, psyching himself up for when James and Sirius arrive.

Gumshoe is getting ready to give them "The Talk."]

[There's a good reason why Margot doesn't have kids, and this Talk business is one of them.

She comes home from work, still in her nurse's uniform, and makes a beeline straight for the kitchen. Bottle of whiskey, right where she had left it, good.

With her vice in hand, feeling more prepared to deal with this situation and fully intending to let Gumshoe do all of the talking, she finally joins him out in the living room, perching herself on the armrest of one of the plush recliners.]

Let's assume by now he knows Margot was previously here, yes? >.>

[Gumshoe nods solemnly, seeming set on this path.]

Yeah, I mean, I might luck out and they might have had this talk with their parents, but if not, it's probably best I go over it with them.

And there's a chance Mayfield might be doing that thing where it locks random adults and teenagers together for a night, remember?

I'd rather have this talk before that happened than after. And I'd like to think their parents would have liked them to have that info and play it safe.

[The thought occurs to her now that she may actually have to do this in the future with her nieces, now that her sister is dead.

Shit. She drinks deeply from the bottle of whiskey, then offers it to Gumshoe in case he needs something for the nerves.]

The hotel wasn't that bad. I mean, I did have to wake up next to some guy -- er, no offense -- but nothing happened. Personally, I'd be more afraid they'd end up with a psycho and get murdered.

[Yeah. Margot is very helpful.]

You could have also just asked me to get them a book at the hospital, if it's that important.

[James thunders down the stairs, far too cheery as usual] Oi, what'd we do. Usually we know what we did before we get into it with the law, but we've been rather good. How odd. Perhaps we should fix that.

Maybe it's one of those 'preemptive strikes' I keep hearing about. Emergency preparedness and all that.

[Sirius was following along with his hands clapped onto James's shoulders. He was practically pushing the other boy down the stairs. He wanted to check out the muggle reccord shop with James before it closed or something equally stupid ... like another carnival came into town.]

[Okay, Gumshoe can do this. He is an adult and he is an officer of the law, they'll at least give him a bit of respect and listen right?]

No, you aren't in trouble, just needed to go over something. Um, you might want to sit, not too sure how long this will take.

[Gumshoe takes a breath to give him a moment before continuing.]

So, um, you guys are teenagers, and I know you're pretty good at taking care of yourselves, but, um, I need to make sure of something from you, okay?

I mean, you're going out and having fun, making friends, going out on dates and such, and I just wanted to make sure whether or not your parents ever told you....told you, er, you know, about the birds and the bees.

He was on his bike, going down the street when he see's a very tall man shuffling down it looking rather, paranoid? He's not sure what the word is but he soon bikes along side the man.]

[Gumshoe jumps slightly in surprise, tossing the bag up a bit before quickly grabbing it and tucking it back under his arm.]

[Sherlock is at work again, doing his boring job in the dull town. But Mister Shifty-Eyes catches his attention.]

[For someone seeming to be looking out for others, he sure is easy to walk up to and startle.]

Gah! Oh, um, hey. Did you say help? Er...

[Gumshoe takes a moment wondering if it would be worse to ask where he can find what he's looking for or find it have the employee ring it up. Well, he works here, so maybe this isn't so awkward for him as it is for Gumshoe...]

I, uh, guess so? I'm looking for the um.... Let's see, what would this town call it... The 'family planning' aisle?

[Gumshoe is trying not to look in their eyes, he's not sure if his courage could hold out if he thought they were judging him.]

[Gumshoe gets a shocked look on his face and tries to hide the bag behind his back.]

What?! No! Nothing suspicious! I'm a police detective after all! I'm just running errands! Simple errands!!

[Yeah, way to sell that whole not suspicious thing, Gumshoe.]

[So Holland is the one checking Gumshoe out, being a pharmacy employee and all. ]

[Oh thank god, quick and easy and no questions, just what is needed for this embarrassing purchase. Gumshoe pays Holland and the brown bag before giving a nod of thanks and backing away from the counter...

...And right into a nearby stand, sending items scattering everywhere with a loud crash. Once the noise settles down, Gumshoe gives Holland a sheepish grin.]

Er, sorry about that, pal. I'll get it! Have it looking like new in just a moment!

[Czes takes a lot of walks, ending up on a lot of different streets. He was just passing by when he's startled by the large crash, too, and Gumshoe will have a kid staring in wonder from the sidewalk.]

... That's an interesting looking car you've got there, mister.

[Gumshoe looks around a moment and finally sees Czes.]

Oh. Hey kid. Yeah, it's a police cruiser. ...Well was a police cruiser. I had to borrow it to get some evidence to court.

It didn't go so well.

[Rita is leaning in the doorframe of the living room, staring awkwardly toward Gumshoe, or more specifically the pharmacy bag. What exactly does this weirdo plan on doing for this!?]

...Dick. [After a courtesy clearing of her throat, she says it loudly enough so that he notices she's there before he starts practicing with that banana or something equally horrifying.]

[Lost in his own thoughts, Gumshoe didn't notice Rita at first until she clears her throat and speaks.]
