A)945 Beulah Street

[Mindy got up early on Mother's day, and her not!family will find somewhat lumpy and slightly overdone pancakes on the table. And there is a handmade card sitting by Fate's plate. It heavily leans on glitter and the color pink to deliver Mindy's mother's day wishes. It's the thought that counts? She sure seems excited.]

Good Morning~! I made breakfast!

B)At the park

[Mindy has been in Mayfield long enough to know that today is the day when she can convince way more people to pay attention to her for some reason. So she might as well take advantage of it.]

Yeah. Normally they follow it up with a real hit. It's pretty harsh if they time it so you dodge right into the next strike. Runnin' right into somebody's fist ain't fun.

So then how can you tell if someone's faking?

Well... First, you gotta keep a good eye on your opponent's movements. Keep your eyes on their chest- right below their neck. That's where their center is, and if they're really gonna throw somethin', you'll see movement there first. Fakes are thrown weak, so basically there won't be much movement at their center. Unless they're pretty good.

[He pauses, wondering if he was rambling too much. It never struck him how difficult explaining fighting could be.]

You'll get it with practice.

[She nods, listening very carefully.]

Watch their center.... I think I understand.

But how could I practice that? Won't I need a partner?

We can practice together.

[He's not too keen to try and hit a little girl; he has reasonable control and she shouldn't get hurt.]

I'll go easy on you, I promise. There seem to be a few people who know how to handle themselves here, too, so we can try to ask around if you need more people to practice with.

[She's thrilled.]

Yeah! Maybe there's other kids who'd want to learn.

[Watch it Firo, she'll have you teaching street fighting elementary if you aren't careful.]

[He's just teasing; he trusts that she'll practice well.]

[He wouldn't be opposed to that. Mindy could be assistant teacher!]

I have a few friends who were talking about this kind of stuff before. I could ask them!

I bet there's some kids left in town who were in the Kids Next Door!

Definitely ask 'em! You're gonna need some more people to beat up on.

[She giggles.]

It was a club. It's not really around anymore, but it was a bunch of kids who worked together to protect all the other kids in town.

They hid me in their clubhouse once when some bad people were coming after me.

Yeah? That sounds pretty neat.

[Too bad it's not still around, it seems like plenty of kids in Mayfield would need a club like that.]

[He's pretty disgusted at whoever they were. What could Mindy have done to them? She seems harmless.]

It was! They were all real nice! But the kids who were running it got droned, so....

[She trails off. Anyone who has lived in Mayfield for a few months knows how that sort of thing goes.]

Were you here when everybody got the letters that said if you killed somebody they'd give you a prize? It was back then.

[An understatement. He wonders if their involvement in the club led to the droning or if it was just by unhappy chance.

He blinks a few times and clenches his fists; his friends and Family aren't the most morally upright but none of them would try and kill a kid.]

No, but I heard about it. That's disgraceful! Are they still here?

[If so, then Firo wouldn't mind being the one to dish out some justice.]

Some of them are... They've all got their names on a big plaque at the roller rink.

There really were prizes too. The ones that killed a lot of people got cars.

Really? I'll hafta check it out sometime.

[He shakes his head. In his book, the only thing worth killing for is family.]

Can't believe people here were stupid enough to fall for that crap. Though I guess some were just sick bastards waitin' for an excuse to cut loose. You know if anybody ever paid those guys back?

Everyone had been killing and dying for days and days. Everyone was scared and tired and sick of it. So when it was over, I guess they kind of just wanted to forget it.....

[The smile she gives him is equal measures grateful and sad. She wishes someone could teach the murderers of Mayfield a lesson. But she's also seen people try. And she knows what happens when they do.]

[When you're in Firo's line of work you don't hear that word too often. He blinks, then laughs as he ducks his head away.]

There's a lot of people here who don't care at all what happens to kids in this town. And only a few people are willing to listen and take a kid seriously! Only a real nice person would care that much...

That's just how people are, I guess. Doesn't really seem right- you guys are worth the same as everybody else, right?

[He shrugs.]

It doesn't mean I'm nice- but, hey, if you ever need a hand, I'll be here to give it.

I always thought so....
