08 ☆ The Knight and the Devil

[2236 Stevens Road; locked for introspection]

[Sora had never experienced an unwanted gift before, not until those weeks back around Christmas. From 'Santa', which had meant from the town, and she was still glad she had decided to wait and open them alone instead of with the others in her household. The first had been innocent enough, but the second...

A broken apple barrette.

She'd seen it before! Hadn't she? In a dream! The little girl had had it! The little girl was—!

That, however, had not been what the town meant to return to her. The very moment Sora picked it up out of the box and held it aloft to look at, she remembered. It all came back in a flood of garbled, terrifying images; Karin was there, so was she, but she was the girl! But that made no sense! Karin couldn't have been there! And what about the journey? Why did the knight leave? The knight left?! Why did Tsuki... why did Ix... the knight left, Karin said so, and..

Tsuki. Tsuki had been so angry. Why did she have a knife? She had a knife! Why did she have a—
The barrette clattered against the far wall, flung away, the last effort Sora had made before crumbling down onto her bed and staring after where it had landed.

Sora hadn't dared to touch it again since. Four weeks and all she could do was try to forget it was there, holding the rest of whatever it had meant for her to remember. Four weeks of nightmares, four weeks of becoming too fearful to even remain in her own room, instead suddenly taking to sneaking back downstairs to sleep on the sofa instead, four weeks in hopes that the memories would fade, but it wasn't happening.

In the story, the knight gave up— Ehhh?! That's! But why?! He stopped in his tracks and turned—

The knight had given up and had stopped his fight to protect the princess, Sora wondered if that was what it had been trying to tell her. All that dread from something so small and she couldn't even face it. She couldn't even understand what it had been about, so much of it had been incomprehensible. Certain people could not have been there, those things couldn't have happened, she couldn't have done that, but what if? What if? Where could she even turn with this? Sanguinius, gone, and even the town itself, even Tsuki, had tried to tell her she'd been wrong to even try being the knight, and now...

[2237 Stevens & 5720 Cunningham Lane]

[Sora had a lot of thinking to do, but before she could even begin that, there were several things she felt she no longer deserved, things she would be returning. Set just outside the back door of 2237 Stevens is a wrapped up sword, the one Sanguinius had given her, along with the Blood Angel pin he had, likewise, had made for her, pinned to the cloth the blade is wrapped in.

It comes with a simple note of:

'Mr. Loken,

He would have wanted you to have them if I no longer needed them. Sorry about the sheath, I still need it to keep the light sword in.

- Sora H.
'

And to 5720 Cunningham Lane, something similar, though this time it is clothes! The winter cape and scarf with the word 'knight' in it, parceled up along with the silly Knight of Justice costume she had been given back after Halloween. It, too, has a note:

'Sorry. I can't be a knight right now. Will you please take care of these for me?'

This one isn't signed, really, because who else could it be from?

[Around Town]

[The rest of the evening for Sora Himoto is spent wandering aimlessly from place to place around Mayfield. She has a lot of thinking to do, very little of it entailing anything good (though her first thought is actually 'why didn't I keep that winter cloak, it is cold out tonight'), and she'd much rather be moving around while doing that.

Her route takes her through the park, to the library to page through books uselessly, not reading them, and to the malt shop for a depressing malt break (but not so depressing, since food is involved). Finally, once the sun has gone down and the street lights begin to pop on, her journey through town will end at the swingset at the elementary school's playground. She's a little too tall to swing on something like that properly anymore, but she can sit on it just fine, and so that's what she does.
