Chapter 10: Greenill Section ID Day?

[ACTION - A (BACKDATED TO MARCH 17, Anywhere in Mayfield, Morning to Evening, OPEN TO ALL)]

[See that six-foot android covered head to toe in some sort of armor, going about his business?]

[He's not wearing green. At all.]

[Try to pinch him. Go on, try it.]

[ACTION - B (BACKDATED TO MARCH 17, John Doe Park, Afternoon, OPEN TO ALL)]

[That same android now seems to have a couple of drones following him, even hanging on to him, desperately trying to pinch him—on the hard, armored parts of his body. Suffice to say, they're not having much luck—and the android looks a little annoyed as he tries to brush some of the drones off of him.]

What in th' hell are ya'll on about?

[ACTION - C (BACKDATED TO MARCH 17, Olney's Tavern, Evening, OPEN TO ALL)]

[Gat's noticed the sizable amount of patrons heading toward the tavern, both droned and undroned alike. Curious, he's come to the tavern himself, though judging from the way he carries himself and rubs the back of his helmeted head as he scans the tavern ~~in a manner not unlike the Terminator~~, he's a little perplexed.]

[Gilgamesh grabs his hand and shakes it eagerly.]

I'm GILGAMESH! I don't have a last name because those hadn't come into vogue back when I was born, so Gilgamesh is my only name. Yes, I'm that Gilgamesh.

[He grins, expecting Gat to drop to his knees and grovel at any second.]

It ain't so hilarious when they're dead-set on spreadin' "holiday cheer."

[That came from Gat, who's standing over there in hopes that maybe the drones will be too distracted talking to the other metal man. The drones do take notice of the green chestplate when Tony points it out, though! YOU'RE OFF THE HOOK, TONY.]

"Oh! So you do!"

"Top o' the mornin' to you, Mr. Stark!"

"Mr. Gatt isn't wearing anything green today! He's such a square."

[To which Gat protests.]

Hey now, ya'll can't drag me into this here town an' expect me to know about th' customs of a whole new world—!

[Gat rubs the back of his neck a little sheepishly. He has a feeling he's killed a perfectly malicious-less holiday with that thought.]

I reckon so ... There ain't no real pattern aside from their love for wreckin' holidays.

[Which he's reflected on. Aside from this and last month (possibly), the only month where something really hideous didn't happen was October last year ... even after factoring in Aurica getting permanently droned after she and the rest of Gat's "family" was "killed" and turned into Bela Lugosi wannabes. Which is one reason he doesn't want to openly muse about it.]

I heard some folks sayin' another one's comin' up.

[Tony shakes his head. They're like the robotic Lollipop Guild.] Uh. Do you guys actually know each other, or what?

[And it all flies over Gat's head! He just nods and continues in his friendly, laid-back demeanor.]

Well, I can't say that name rings a bell—I ain't even from a world like this one. Or at least, th' one this town's s'posed to be modeled on.

Ah. That explains it. All you need to know is that where I come from, I'm the very first hero ever.

They just like wrecking everything. Holidays are just the worst sort of time to do it.

[She looks surprised and concerned, when Gat talks of "another one" coming up. But then it hits her, and she gives a slow nod.]

...Easter? I've heard about that at the church. Sounds like a spring festival. It's about the son of God sacrificing himself for everyone, and then rising from the dead. I think that's how it went, anyway...

[Her nose wrinkles again. Oh great, what kind of horrible stuff can Mayfield do with a holiday like THAT? But isn't rising from the dead par for the course around here...?]

...hey, you want drink? It's normal beer! It doesn't taste green!

[Why yes let's change the subject]

[Gat would look disgusted and a little apprehensive right now, if he could emote with his face. But the way he dips his head slightly, propping an elbow on the table and resting the "chin" of his faceplate on his hand does a good job getting his state of mind across.]

A day that important to th' religion 'round these parts—I wouldn't put it past th' town doin' somethin' horrible then. Though, there were folks tellin' me about somethin' else happenin' last year ... Somethin' about April Fool's, an' th' elaborate "prank" th' town's leadership set up. An' th' next month's called April.

[He sounds pretty concerned, although the offer of beer does get his mind off the subject. Mostly.]

Well, I reckon it wouldn't hurt to try some.

[~~Alicia usually drinks anything remotely alcoholic before he can ever try it for himself; this might be his only chance!~~]

[Gat tilts his head inquisitively.]

Th' very first one?

[While there's surprise in his tone of voice, it's not necessarily one of disbelief—Gat's taking Gilgamesh for his word since, well, there's little reason to believe otherwise. Especially since this town takes anyone from anywhere—there's no way to independently confirm this information.]

[Gat looks over to Tony.]

I ain't ever met 'em before. They jus' singled me out.

"Mr. Gatt's a firefighter! I see him working at the fire station all the time!"

"Golly, I want to be a firefighter when I grow up!"

Hmm? Don't tell me you don't know of Saint Patrick's Day, either. I feel like I'm the only one in town who does. Or not, since it sounds like you've gotten pinched already.

The first one of any consequence. I was the first part-mortal that anyone ever wrote a story about.

If I were to lose something like this town, I doubt I would want it back.

They seem to know YOU pretty well. Maybe they're your online fanbase. I met a group of mine before. Kind of unpleasant. Sweaty guys with neither original tech ideas nor girlfriends. Still, fans are fans. At least yours are just brainless children.

Okay guys. Not everyone has green in their wardrobe. Least of all befuddled southerners in armor. Clear on outta here.

[Gat shakes his head.]

Naw, there ain't a day like that where I'm from. You're right about gettin' pinched, though. Feels like everyone's been tryin' to get a piece of me.

[He really feels sorry for the people without armored body parts. It ain't easy being greenless today.]

I'd reckon so, but I'm thinkin' it wasn't always like this.

[Unless what people had found so far was just more misdirection ...]

Folks've been writin' about heroes ever since they'd had language. An' that means—

[Gat pauses, thinking this over. Obviously this means Gilgamesh is from a very, very early time period—and yet Mayfield might not have necessarily taken him from that time. After all, if he's saying he's the very first hero of note, and yet he knows about someone who's pretty much a national or cultural hero of another country ...]

[But that pause is just long enough for Gilgamesh to interject if he wants!]

Yeah, I'm that old. But because I'm so awesome, I get to be an immortal minor god.

[At last, the drones listen to Tony's command!]

"Okay! Bye, Mr. Gatt!"

"Bye, Mr. Stark!"

"Happy St. Patrick's Day!"

[Gat heaves a relieved sigh to see the drones straggle off. He watches them leave for a moment, then turns back to Tony once they're out of conversational distance.]

What's this about bein' a southerner now?

[Gat's posture changes. He sounds both at once surprised and a little disturbed.]

An' you've been livin' for a long time by th' time Mayfield took ya.

[He looks around at the surroundings for a moment, as if taking in Mayfield's rather flat skyline.]

... This here town's capable of takin' gods. That's a lil' disconcertin'.

Yeah, a long time. But it was well worth it because I've done stuff no one else has ever done before.

[He joins Gat in looking at the surroundings.]

Hm...I've got no direction sense and I've walked into parallel universes before, so maybe it was a combination of my habits and Mayfield's operating system?

[Tony waves mildly at them as they troop off.]

Well, you've got a real southern drawl in your voice there, stranger. It's pretty obvious.

I'm so used to this town being filled with malice, I can't imagine it as anything else...

I know what you mean.

[Gat rubs the back of his neck in thought.]

I'd sure like to know what led to things bein' this way, if'n this ain't how it's meant to be.

[Gat tilts his head.]

I ain't followin' you, pardner. D'you mean "south" in relation to where you're from?
