[ Guess who's now on staff in the kitchen at the diner downtown?

If your answer was: "That boy who could probably start a grease fire by looking at the cooker the wrong way", you're halfway there!

It's not that Touma can't cook, or doesn't like to. He's had to do it while he lived on his own back home, and he does a fair bit of it around the house (when his "mother" lets him). No, he's pretty content (and by content I mean listless) as he works at filling orders and setting them up for others to take to the tables.

But things just happen around him. It's kind of like that clause in insurance policies that mention "act of God" or "force of nature". Except these kinds of acts of misfortune are not the sort he can do anything about, even if he does have his abilities back. ]

[ Right now the kitchen has been temporarily evacuated as the Mayfield Fire Department handles a bit of a mess in there and he is standing outside away from the drone crew, work uniform and apron on and looking just a bit scorched.

Looking at the building with despair, he sighs quietly to himself and hunches his shoulders. ] This is just my luck...

Did they give you a job, too? [ People can sound as young or old as they want over the phones, so he doesn't assume. ]

[He chuckles, though he might have liked a job.]

I'm only just ten, I go to the school.

[ Abashedly. ] Heh, well you never know with this place...

Maybe if I'm here long enough, it'll be me setting fire to the diner...

[ A quiet chuckle. ] Everyone has their goals, right?

[ Though he falls quiet after that little joke. ] ...I don't plan on being around that long. Or having others be here, either, if I can help it.

[He's honestly torn on the issue of Mayfield versus home, though he would like to be free of both of them - both were trapping him in one way or another.]

I'm sure if we all work together, we'll find a way out one day. Just hold onto hope.

Exactly. Good to know someone else has the sense to think that way around here.

I think most people here think that way, some are just more impatient than others.

I can't blame the impatient ones. Giving up and resigning to this existence is what really bothers me.

[He disagrees, the impatient ones are the ones more likely to attack and incite the town leaders into retaliation - better that they seem subdued, and then those in charge may grow complacent. Regardless, he's said enough here, voice rising to become more cheerful.]

I don't think anyone will resign themselves to being here, if you keep burning down the diner.

I like it there, where will I get my hamburgers now? I might die.

Don't screw with me. I didn't burn it down, and I won't be making that same mistake twice! [ For a while, at least. ]

I hope not, because it would be a travesty if the diner were to be lost.

I guess it would kind of limit my options. It's not bad.

[ Anyway... ] All this talking about it made me forget I said I'd help with dinner.
