event: portal one | the island

The first portal doesn’t take long to locate: it’s across the road from the Rec Center, in a field visible from the pool. There is no shimmering or flashy effects to indicate the portal’s presence. There is simply an eight-by-five-foot vertical hole in the middle of the air, a hole through which a vast expanse of sand and surf can be seen. Said hole is completely two-dimensional- walk to its side, and it will seem as though it’s disappeared.

There are times, however, when the portal seems to disappear even when viewed from the front. Every once in a while, the portal appears to flicker ever so faintly, like a television briefly losing signal. Don’t worry about it- it’s probably nothing. Those who visited the carnival last month and viewed the pockets of nothingness that plagued it may feel a familiar sense of physical discomfort when staring at the portal for too long- as if your eyes instinctively know that they’re looking at something that shouldn’t exist in this world.

Stepping through the portal doesn’t burn or hurt at all, although the temperature immediately rises on the other side from early autumn to the peak of a tropical summer. There is, however, a slight tingle to your skin that lasts only for moments upon passing through. Again, probably nothing. The portal does not vanish after you pass through it: behind you you can see the field and the rec center in the distance.

The island has no name. Its beach stretches from east to west as far as the eye can make out, and the great sea lapping at its edges is a bright, clear blue. Looking out at the ocean you can see that it’s calm, the waves soft and almost inviting. There’s no other land on the horizon, only a vast expanse of endless sea.

The only signs of human habitation you can make out are littered on the beach around you. A set of towels, beach chairs and umbrellas have been set up a short distance away from the portal. In the wet sand left in the high tide’s wake, a series of sand castles have been constructed, as well as a shallow pit where someone may have been buried in the sand.

On the opposite edge of the beach lies a forest of palm trees. The foliage is thick, but there seems to be a path carved into the flora a short distance away from the shore.

[Someone has found the memento!

Abruptly the winds pick up into an all out hurricane without even a second's warning. If you happen to be on the clifftops, bad luck because it's likely you'll be picked up by the wind and thrown into the ocean.

Anyone falling in the ocean (or in it already) might be surprised to find sharks swimming at them all of sudden. Lightning is striking the beach and forest, and trees are falling.

Not just that, but the water level is rising... seems like the island itself is sinking!]

[That lightning strike was too close for words. Luckily, his speed is nice and boosted in this form. Hopefully it'll be enough to get out of dodge.]

[ Oi oi, this wasn't even funny, he's almost blowing away here!

Then he spots Marvelous (not that he knows it's him when he looks like that), but when Marvelous runs past he uses his blue fire to grab a hold of Marvelous around the waist. Hey, you're now his free ride, congratulations! At least he's made sure the fire won't burn Marvelous to a crisp. ]

[Crud, crud, crud! Why is there hurricane winds? Why is there lightening striking everywhere? What the heck is this madness? Jim's getting the heck outta here as he flys on his solar surfer towards the portal. But when he see's people being tossed in the air he veers around to catch them by the hand.]

GRAB ON!

[ooeeooahah]

[ There is a line of strong blue light pointing in the direction of the portal, ] JIM! Get everyone you can to that spot!

[ Ilsa has flattened to the ground, but is trying to reach the others, pointing in the right direction. ]

[Harry, who had decided to stick with Jim because his solar surfer was cool, was glad he did.] What's going on?!

[Chell had been standing by the shoreline with Cliff when things got disastrous. Between the wind blasting, the lightning, the rising ocean, and the sudden appearance of sharks, Chell knew she had to get out of there as fast as she could.

With that, she started bolting away from the ocean and towards the portal, hoping that it was still there.]

[The rest of whatever profanity Cliff was about to utter was carried away in the howl of the winds.

Chell had the right idea, and he's running after her, cursing softly under his breath. He's hoping she knows a quicker way back to the portan than he does--the winding route he'd taken to get out that far wasn't going to be a quick one to take to return.]

[Chell's path had been fairly straightforward, she had walked until she had arrived at the shoreline and then had picked a direction to walk towards until she came across Cliff.

So, now, she's heading in a diagonal towards where she thinks the portal is. She's had practice in remembering where portals were located, so the only trouble that she should have is getting there before the place kills her.]

[Sherlock had been wading in the water when all hell broke loose. The wind pushed him farther in than he had wanted to go and the sudden storm surge was pulling him out to sea. Closer, he noticed, to a school of sharks.]

This is not my day.

[Not that he had a "his day" since he fell from St. Bart's roof. He was struggling against the torrents just to keep his head above water. His clothes clung to him and impeded his ability to swim. It was as if the harder he tried to swim to shore, the farther away shore became.]

[Sherlock cried out, hoping someone would hear him.]

I'm in the...

[A wave crashed over his head and pulled him under for a moment. He got his head above water again and finished his sentence.]

WATER!

[He spluttered again. And opened his eyes now. Which is when he noticed the island was so far away. And that the Sharks were closer than they were before. Much closer... too close. They shouldn't be able to swim that fast.]

[With renewed energy, Sherlock starts swimming harder to shore and tries to call out again.]

ANYONE!?

[Because it would be beneath him to actually use the word "help."]

[Ema is about to answer Crowe (she has a lot of questions and theories about the influx of returning Mayfield "citizens") when suddenly the wind picks up, knocking her off her feet and sending her crashing into the sand.]

Oof!

[A glance out at the ocean shows a much less serene picture than what it was just a moment ago.]

[Crowe barely manages to stay on his feet, with this hitting almost out of nowhere.]

Wh-What just happened!? Ema...! [He'll help her up as best he can.]

[ It's good that Nadeko never got really far, so she's just still on the edges of the beach, but still.. she hardly knows what's happening, she's just staring at everything with wide eyes. She hardly even dares to move really, frozen there on the spot-- it's a good thing Kay is nearby to help her, right..? ]

[After Connla left Sherlock laying there on the beach, he started to take stalk of his situation. He was alive, but if he didn't find something to stop the bleeding, he wouldn't be for much longer.]
