mayfield_rpg | event: portal four

The fourth portal, as might be expected, can be found atop the hill known as Makeout Point. The other side of the portal isn't altogether that much different from the side you're entering from, save for the thicker trees and somewhat darker lighting.

The other side of the portal is significantly colder than the Mayfield side; frost covers the ground, and although it's not quite freezing, you'll want to bundle up. A glance at the sky reveals what you might have been dreading: glitch holes, in varying size, litter the skyline. The sun is hidden behind a set of thick clouds, creating a melancholy atmosphere.

The landscape around you is relatively flat, and you can't see too far beyond the forest ahead of you. It isn't until you turn around, facing the portal that you entered from, that you see the rising slope of the ground. The mountain rises high, higher than you can see from its base. There's a rough, primitive path heading up its slope, and for now simply hiking will be sufficient. As you get further, however, simply walking won't be enough: you're going to have to climb...

Somewhere, closer than you might prefer, a single wolf howls, and is shortly joined by more.

Better get moving.

[All Hajime sees is a falling human; it happens so suddenly he hasn't had a chance to register who it might be. He's over there as quickly as he can, scoring a successful rescue catch attempt. It's only then he realizes who it is he's caught.

Gentarou, you've got quite a knack for showing up unexpectedly.]

...you really need to be more careful.

[And he'll set Gentarou down.]

[Gen shakes his dizzy head as he recovers from the sudden rush...and the want of the parachute switch. Then he sees his rescuer.]

Thank you, Hajime-sempai!

[Hug launched!]

[Natalie was coming into this exploration at somewhat of a disadvantage. While she had scouted out the portal from the outside right before dawn, she had quickly retreated home to safely sleep the day away. There wouldn't be much time to gather supplies, but she swiped an actual pair of pants and sensible footwear from Keith, and set out for adventure and discovery.

So far all she had found was cold wind, howling, and those horrible glitchy holes. Ah well. To hell with all of it. She'd climb that mountain. Vampires didn't mind cold, and didn't fatigue easily. Though she wasn't opposed to company, and was keeping an eye out for others. Possibly others that were good at handling wolves...]

[HUG WHAT NO

He will try to dodge, but, nope, the attempt fails. Hug successful!]

Get. Off.

[He's just going to start trying to peel Gentarou off now...]

[Gen'll try for a few seconds to get hug on fully, but will let Hajime go after then.]

I should've realized some of us would investigate these. Just wish I could be prepared as you.

[Was that...

That howl sounded a lot closer than the others. Tieria paused for a moment to see if he could judge just how far. He spotted the shape in the shadows. Narrowing his eyes a little, he watched to see what direction it was moving in. It seemed human enough from here...]

[Well, sort of?]

I have not actually done so, but it seems fairly simple from here. I suppose we will just have to see how far we can get.

[Not a tactic he normally liked, but time was of the essence, and learning about rock climbing just wasn't something they had the luxury of taking a class for right now.]

[Boing. Boing. Boing. The carefree alpaca bounds up the mountain light as air.

...OK, not really, he's already tired when he hears someone calling his name, and he takes advantage of the opportunity for a break.]

Y-Yo...!

G-Geez it's cold up here.

[He's just going to pretend like that hug never happened. It's the only way he can deal with it.]

You could say preparation came with a price--I was here for quite some time before most of my abilities were returned to me.

[Neville holds tight to his wand as he steps through the portal]

Gryffindors are brave.

... Yeah, you're right. Hopefully there isn't a trap or something at the top.

[She really isn't looking forward to this, but she pushes that aside as she heads up the path.]

I get the feeling this isn't simple survival skills you're talking about.

[Natalie is making her own way up the mountain, dressed in a similarly sensible fashion but carrying far less stuff. Her pace had been quick enough to catch up with some of the folk that had gotten a much, much earlier start, so here she was just about tailing Mika.]

....hey.

[Really, all of Natalie's clattering around on rocks probably should have alerted the wolfish-looking girl to the fact that someone was coming up from behind. She wasn't that great at the great outdoors.]

How much farther do you think we've got?

[Tieria nodded.]

Perhaps, traveling with another person would be best?

[Climbing a foreign mountain alone probably wasn't the best idea, after all.]

[Hello armored bug-man. Have yourself a sensibly-dressed vampire trying to make up for lost time, crawling her way up the mountain at steady pace.]

...ahh?

[Was that Hajime ahead? Transformed? It was hard to tell. He was fairly far ahead, and calling out seemed like a less-than-great idea. So she doubled-down on her resolve and burned some blood and began to scrabble upwards much quicker.

He'll probably hear her coming before he sees her. All the crunching gravel and clattering rocks.]

[He'll nod at that.]

Doesn't matter though: I came here because someone's in trouble, and I aim to help them. Cause that's what a Kamen Rider does! Fourze Driver or no!

[She glances back at him, thinking for a moment, before nodding. She really didn't want to be alone when trying to climb this.]

Ah, that's true... My name is April, by the way.

I know, right?

[He'll adjust his jacket slightly.]

I wish I had known it'd be this cold before. I'd of brought a muffler with me.

It's a Jedi thing. We can leave it at that.

[And human-shaped it was, walking towards the mountain path in a coat and jeans, with a heavy bag of supplies. But the silhouette of those pointed ears and waving tail is rather suspicious.]

[Firo's not quite as prepared, something he regrets as he buttons up his jacket against the chill. He slips his hands into his pockets as his eyes track up the mountain.]

'Least you got somethin' of a chance to hit a wolf if it attacks you, right? Don't know what you could do about those freaky holes.

[He tries to keep his tone nonchalant, but inside he's already getting worried about this whole thing.]

[Her ears had flicked back toward Natalie the instant she'd started to draw close, the footsteps were easy enough to pick out. When Natalie actually addressed her, Mika glanced over her shoulder, her tail wagging.]

Haven't the foggiest! With holes in the sky like that? [She jerked a thumb at the obvious glitches.]

Anything could happen.

[Neville got a bit distracted by he big old hole in the sky and wound up nearly running into her]

Oh... sorry.

Figured that was the plan.

[And here they are with no climbing equipment. They're going to be roughing it.]

[He heard that, all right. Sounds like it's moving quite a bit faster than any of the humans he'd seen scattered here and there on the mountain.

Anticipating a possible attack from behind, he whips around in a combat crouch, ready to meet whatever's coming for him. He straightens up rather quickly once he spots Natalie and realizes exactly who it is.]

Wasn't expecting to see you out here like this.
