The past few days, Kyon has been notably sulkier than usual and even less sociable. He doesn't even seem to pretend to work while at the office. You may encounter him at any regular location, but don't expect friendly chit chat.

B) Action, School:

Tonight, Kyon has broken into school grounds in the middle of the night in order to do something remarkably out of character for him. Using groundskeeping equipment, he has drawn a strange symbol into the ground.

I see. If you are not certain of what you remember, perhaps you should not be attempting to use it. You may end up provoking an attack instead.

That is, of course, provided someone actually sees it.

Would an alien attack really be any worse than Mayfield's usual shenanigans?

That would depend on the aliens. [Not that Mayfield wasn't dangerous, really, but Tieria didn't exactly like being turned into metal, either.]

Besides, do you have a way to defend yourself if it comes to that? [Tieria did, but he wasn't going to say anything about it, just yet. He wanted to see if this kid had thought things through first, unlike a certain Saji Crossroad...]

(So my girlfriend leaves town and the first thing that happens is that I'm grilled as to whether I'm prepared for an alien invasion. ... Yeah, that sounds like my life.)

Then perhaps you should have thought things through before you started painting alien symbols on the ground.

What's the actual likelihood of aliens attacking at this point anyway?

If Mayfield itself does not completely fall apart first? Fairly high, considering all past events.

I'm pretty sure we already had aliens last year.

Do you think that would truly stop it from happening again? [Tieria looked doubtful.]

They don't tend to recycle that many ideas here, preferring to go for the fresher forms of terribleness.

Perhaps not. However, if you are attempting to contact aliens outside the reach of Mayfield, that introduces a new variable, which would then allow for a possible repeat of a former occurance.

Well, it's more like a futile attempt to contact someone else which was originally devised for aliens. And if aliens did find us here, we might at least find a way out.

If they did not destroy us after locating us.

[Sorry, Kyon, but Tieria was eternally pessimistic.]

Destruction is hardly permanent here anyway.

Things have not been operating as they normally would. Objects turn intangible at random times. We should still be careful.

(... I wonder if that could have anything to do with Haruhi's disappearance? I mean, people leave all the time, but Haruhi was always... unique, as Koizumi never neglected to remind me.)

It was that attitude that destroyed the Dairy and started the strange problems with our environment falling apart.
