It was strange, they were saying something about independence and letting off fireworks.

Do you think there used to be some other power in control of the town? It doesn't seem like anyone is here of their own free will, I'd hardly call it independence.

It's to celebrate our independence from Britan! They were huge jerks and used to own us, but we fought them and we beat them!
