The story goes that a couple with no children had wanted a child. The wife had noticed that their neighbour next door had been growing the rapunzel plant which is supposed to help them have a child. The husband for two nights steals the plant so his wife could have it and they could have a kid. But on the third night their neighbour, an enchantress, catches him.
The husband begged to be spared and the enchantress agreed only if he gave her their unborn kid. The husband agrees and when the couple's daughter is born the enchantress took her and locked her up in a tower and named her Rapunzel.
