[Hajime is trying to measure himself by standing up against a door frame and marking his height with a pencil. It... isn't working very well, because it's more of a two person job]

W-what do you think happens at home, while we're here? Is time passing? If it isn't... do birthdays here count? I'm gonna be nine soon. I feel older. I'm definitely taller. But... does it mean anything?

I'm sure that the next time they see you, they'll be sure to comment on how much you've grown--but they'll definitely still know it's you.

I know the feeling. I miss the people back home, too.

[Not that he would ever admit that to their faces. Ever.]

[Long pause. He doesn't know what to tell this kid, because he doesn't have any idea himself.]

I really don't know what to tell you, kid. For my part, they might not...I was bad about vanishing without telling anyone where I was going.

[Reassuring conversation is still so hard; this Hajime is such a pessimist. He is, however, trying his best at it.]

If you were supposed to stay together, then they've probably noticed you're missing. They may even be searching for you.

[Oh, geez. Given the nature of this place, this Hajime's can only imagine what might have happened to this kid's friend...he's keeping his voice as gentle as possible.]

What happened to him?

I'm sure he's fine! And safe back home.

[Did that sound convincing enough? He is not very good with enthusiasm. Especially not the optimistic kind.]
