Confession IV

[It really was a big deal for him to speak up, and it had taken a lot of determination for him to come to this conclusion. He was almost ready to give in though, but in the back of his mind he asked himself what would his sister do.]

Um....

[Even if he had the resolve his voice was still very soft and hesitant.]

S-since it's A-Ash Wednesday... I thought... I d-d-decided.... I-I can bless anyone who w-wishes at the Ch-Church today....

[He sounds like he was going to say more but then whatever words he had got stuck in his throat. He struggles for a little bit before simply putting the receiver down.]

[Action; Church]

[He is indeed at the church, all dressed up and everything. Part of him is hoping no one will show up, part of him is hoping that he can set a good example and not be an embarrassment for all members of the Church.]

Um. Which god? There are a lot of 'em, ze. You need to be more specific.

Th-there's only one God.

...no. There's a bunch of 'em. I've met some of them. So, which god are you talking about?

I've n-never heard of any other G-God... only h-heretics t-talk of such things.... G-God is God, the One T-True God....

[He was feeling far out of his depth with this.]

You know, it's not nice to call people who don't agree with you names, ze.

[He sounds incredibly distressed.]

I-I know that I'm j-just....

[One could almost hear him biting his lip at this point.]

I c-can only explain things as I kn-know them... I o-only know what is t-taught by the Ch-Church....

Well, how do you know they're right?

[She sounds curious more than anything.]

H-how could they not be r-right?

Easy. Someone made it up a long, long long time ago and everyone believe them. Happens all the time, ze.

E-even so... th-there's no proof of that.

There's also no proof they're right. I think this is called... [Give her a second to remember her Latin.] Probatio diabolica.

It's a logical fallacy, ze.

B-but there are r-records of g-great miracles.... N-not to mention... th-these sorts of things are a m-matter of faith. I do not need to q-question the e-existence of God, for I have f-faith that He is there and g-guides us all. If my f-faith were so easily w-wavered then... then I w-would definitely have n-no right to c-call myself any s-sort of leader....

Records are nothing more than someone writing something down, ze. They could be made up - nothing but big lies.

And what makes your faith better than other people's faith? So, you believe in this one god of yours. Other people believe in a different god or many gods. Their belief is a matter of faith, too. It's the same as yours, ze. So... what gives? Why are they wrong and you right, when you don't know if their gods exist? You just don't believe they do.

I-I've never met a-anyone who b-believes in a d-different god, j-just people who believe in God with d-d-different systems.... I d-don't know a-anyone currently who b-believes in anything e-else....

Then I guess you don't get out much outside of the Church and talk to the people trapped here, ze. A lot of us believe in other gods.

Might do you some good to get to know 'em.

[And school scared him to death so he kept quiet and didn't talk to anyone there.]

I think you should fix that.

[He doesn't say anything. How could he respond to that? It wasn't like he wasn't trying. He had met so many more people now than he had ever met before.]

How about you specifically ask for people of non-Christian faiths to have a religious discussion with the purpose of learning about them? That might net you some good sources of information.

Or are you just too scared to talk to the 'heretics'? After all, your god should protect you, right?
