event: portal seven | the void

The final portal doesn't seem to be a portal at all. It's a glitch hole.

Located on the lawn of the library is a hole much like the ones that have plagued every new location for the past week. As with them, it hurts your eyes to look at too long, but even if you should muscle past the pain and stare straight into it, you can make out nothing on the other side. Nothing, save for a shifting, twitching, swirling void.

Unlike the portals, which were vertically placed like doorways, the hole at the Library is strewn across the lawn: if you want to enter it, you're going to have to jump. Of course, there's no guarantee it will even lead anywhere. Touching the hole or sticking your arm in doesn't have any effect: you'll pull your arm out unharmed. As far as jumping in completely goes, those who jump in disappear from sight. As long as you're on the Mayfield side, there's no way to tell what lies beyond the hole.

There's only one way to find out.

[ooc: Feel free to roleplay up to the point your characters jump in, assuming they do. A single group subthread will be created in a few hours revealing what happens on the other side.]

[This place is alarming, but it's not--entirely an unfamiliar sort of alarm. It tugs at The Handmaid's senses and makes her mind want to reverse directions, makes all the gears want to screech to a halt, but (when I am already here) she's experienced that sort of feeling before.

She flickers blue and green around her hands, lacking in hairsticks to use as a weapon but still dangerous without them.]

Very well.

(OOC: Doc Scratch might tag into threads if you reply!)

[A pale, violet-haired girl stands staring silently at the clearly non-human organic entity. After a few moments, she speaks up in a monotone.]

Is a weapon required?

[The Handmaid looks at the girl speaking to her. The tone isn't that unlike her own most days, though she won't presume as to know why.]

I can fight without them.

[It's not ideal to not have something to channel her powers through, but The Handmaid doesn't expect offers of help. Although that's all she says, there is a hint of vague curiosity in the way she says it--does this girl have extra weapons to pass out?]

...Understood.

[Several members of this species have been brought to this town thus far. She knows little about them. Many sentient, sapient organic entities had evolved in the past, but only one had ever displayed the potential that so interested the IDSE. Not for the first time, she wonders if there exist worlds where this is not the case.]

Many here are incapable of self-defense. I seek to rectify this. Should you require further power or modification of attributes, please inform me.

[Handmaid looks a bit more closely at the girl. It doesn't appear as if she's carrying an arsenal.]

You have some power, then, to summon objects?
tenderoblivion: (Stare)

[personal profile] tenderoblivion 2012-09-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Yuki blinks slowly at that and shakes her head.]

To 'summon' implies that the object already exists in the desired form.

[Scratch on the other hand is not so alarmed. The sparks and flashes and endless nothing is almost comforting than frightening, even if there is a sense of danger being rung into his mind. Of course he has the feeling that it is less out of danger and more out of necessity. This place is not safe and it does not want others in here.

But, like Handmaid, he at the least brought his magnum and has it holstered in a belt he bought some time ago to hold it. He eyes the bubble that is surrounding them with curiosity.
]

This portal is likely the most dangerous yet. A void of nothing. Mayfield really is breaking apart it seems.

A place such as Mayfield couldn't last long.

[A little reprieve from her work. Something she doesn't think was ever in the plan. And also, apparently, a place that requires a great deal of energy.]

They overextended themselves, I suppose.
cueball: (Chief of Demons)

Quite so.

[He looks around at the scene carefully.]

What do you think happens if the void swallows someone?
noluckduck: (Yes Clo needs varying levels of rage)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-08 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's nice that some people are alright with the maddening void and all. Clover isn't. It's terrible and she just wants to bury her head somewhere, maybe go out cold. Why the hell did she jump?

She gravitates to the nearest calm-looking person, without caring much who they are. In fact, she isn't even looking anywhere in particular.]

You're way too fuckin' okay with this.

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-10 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Handmaid regards the girl with her usual emotionless stare.]

It would be pointless to get worked up. There is little that can be done about this place looking as it does.
noluckduck: (Yeah. No.)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-11 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[She glances at her only briefly. Clover finds she can't really keep her eyes focused anywhere for too long.] I'm not worryin' about the aesthetics, believe me.
corrodes: (and run away from here)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
[Handmaid looks past the girl to the void beyond.] Perhaps it is worth worrying about, however. This is no place to stay long.
noluckduck: (Write pretentious song lyrics for this)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-13 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sayin' it ain't, either. Damn place looks like it could implode and take us with it any time.
corrodes: (this house will burn)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-13 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A place like this would be more likely to swallow everyone inside it up.

[It's not unlike, she supposes, voluntarily walking into a black hole. ]

I suppose we'll have to be quick either way.
noluckduck: (Well it hasn't exploded YET)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-13 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Close enough.

[Quick, huh? She does get the feeling this could end quickly. Abruptly. Either painfully or mind-shatteringly.]

Well, here's hopin' this guy knows what he's doin'.
corrodes: (if God's my witness)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-13 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't been here long. [Relative to how long she's been alive, anyway.] Do we even know who it is we're trusting?
noluckduck: (I-- what--)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-13 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The guy who sent that letter. [...] Right?
corrodes: (if God's my witness)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-13 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we be sure he isn't some lie created by this town, however? [She sounds incredibly calm about the idea they might all be wandering right into some sort of trap, though.]
noluckduck: (If you were here...)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-13 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Clover notices. It's kind of freaky.] ... I dunno. People've been jumpin' into these portals the whole week.
corrodes: (from off my bones)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-13 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A week isn't a terribly long time to uphold a lie, if one is necessary.
noluckduck: (Yeah. No.)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-14 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
True. But... If the point is, y'know, killin' us, why not just do it now? Why all this convoluted crap?
corrodes: (if God's my witness)

[personal profile] corrodes 2012-09-15 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Why indeed. [She's half speaking that to herself. She speaks in less of a mutter when she addresses the question properly.] Perhaps there is some plan involved which requires our participation. Perhaps whoever we're following gets some sadistic enjoyment out of it. Or perhaps they're telling the truth.
noluckduck: (Default)

[personal profile] noluckduck 2012-09-15 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the guys in charge of town are sadistic bastards, there's no arguin' that.

... So now that we're here, we just gotta hope this voice ain't one of them, right?
