dvidešimt devyni; action {February 16}
[It's been more than a year, now, since Lithania arrived in Mayfield, and that was something to think about in and of itself. Of more importance, at least to the nation, was that this was Lithuania's second birthday in Mayfield. Just as it had been last year, being so far from his people on his independence day felt incredibly lonesome. If anything, it was worse this year. He has no idea what his people are doing, if they've been affected by his disappearance, if he's really disappeared at all. It makes his birthday far more melancholy than he thinks it should be. It's not as if every moment here has been bad, of course; he's made friends that he wouldn't have ever had the opportunity to meet otherwise, after all. But even if Mayfield really was the ideal 1950s American town, Lithuania wouldn't want to be there. His people need him. They're not here, and he's glad for that because he would never wish an instant of this torment on any of them, but he still misses them terribly.]

[Lithuania is cleaning up the house, as usual. In honor of his birthday he's given himself the day off, but aside from that he's not entirely sure what to do about it when it seems so inherently wrong to be away from his people today.
He does, however, place his flag outside properly--if a bit wistfully.]
It would look better on a proper flag pole... Ah, but they're not really commonplace around here.
[His puppy, recently regained, runs around his legs. He crouches down to pet the animal.]
Maybe next year we'll celebrate at home.

H-Happy birthday Lithuania...

Thank you. I'm sorry for how I was behaving a couple days ago. Mayfield...

[She holds out her package] ...Since I didn't get to give you anything on Valentines... [It contains a very nice box of chocolates and a smaller wrapped package containing a larger version of his flag carefully stitched together with very sturdy material and thread]

[Lithuania takes the box. The flag is of more interest to him than the chocolates, of course, and his smile is much less unhappy than it was a few moments ago.]
Thank you. Really.

[She pauses and shakes her head]
Sometime last year. Oh, the puppy is really cute Lithuanaia.

[Lithuania smiles, and the puppy, recognizing the attention, wags his tail and circles around both of them.]
He was my reward for getting through January.

[Looking off to one side a bit at the memory, now that he can think on it properly without the hyacinths clouding his brain. The puppy, oblivious, leans into the petting.]
M-Mayfield just does that sort of thing, right?

[Smiling a bit.]

[In other words, he might get dragged off to celebrate by Poland or someone but he can't be sure until it happens.]
