If that's true... why can't people predict what exactly they'll do next? Sure, the whole carnival thing seemed suspicious [and she was stupid stupid stupid for falling for it, ugh.] but if Mayfield was as predictable as you make it seem, wouldn't people have been able to figure out what they were planning?
